Notorious Terrorist Commander Barhadine Mehdoune Arrested by Nigerien Armed Forces in Agamdez | ABK News
A major breakthrough in counterterrorism operations has been recorded in northern Niger as the Nigerien Armed Forces apprehended a high-profile terrorist leader, Barhadine Mehdoune, during a recent security sweep in the Agadez region.
Mehdoune, a former officer of the Libyan army who deserted with a faction of loyal fighters, had been operating in the northern axis of Agadez, orchestrating violent attacks that terrorised communities and destabilised the area.
Security sources disclosed that Mehdoune was captured while leading a column of fighters through the region. In an attempt to evade identification, he falsely claimed to be Aboubacar Boudour Balla, a driver by profession.
However, vigilant military personnel, who had his photographs and intelligence profile, quickly identified him despite the alias. He was subsequently arrested without resistance and is currently in custody.
