After the civil war, General Yakubu Gowon was told by some European experts that the only way Nigeria could make real progress was for the country to pursue industrialization, because crude oil money was not sustainable. Limited in knowledge, Gowon asked his European friends what exactly industrialization entailed. They told him it was simple; that Nigeria must learn to produce engines, machines, etc.
He heeded this advice and set out on the task to industrialize Nigeria. First stop, he asked that the Biafran scientists who had produced machines during the war be assembled to spearhead the industrialization project. Dr. Felix Oragwu, a nuclear physicist, who was part of the team that produced 'Ogbunigwe,' was called to build a team in this regard.
When he was first contacted, according to him, he thought they had come for him to punish him for the role he played during the war. But eventually he went and met Gowon who mandated him to build a team of scientists. He did, deliberately including people from every part of country, even if they weren't going to contribute much, just to ensure national spread and remove any suspicion. He then presented his recommendations to the ruling military council. Part of the recommendations was that an institute be set up in Enugu where facilities already existed, and where most of the wartime scientists lived.
But once Murtala Mohammed - whom he said was never comfortable with the idea and never hid his disdain for him - heard about setting up an institute in Enugu, he flared up and accused him of trying to empower fellow rebels to wage another war against Nigeria.
Mohammed, he said, pointedly asked Gowon whether it was military government they were running or technical government; to which Gowon answered military government. He then said that since it was military government, the technicians should be thrown out of the government. And that was how the meeting ended.
I interviewed Dr. Oragwu few years ago.

Breaking News: Nigeria in Deep Trouble, Urban Bandits Have Taken Over Leadership–El-Rufai
–Lagos Reporters
Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has raised alarm over what he describes as Nigeria’s worst crisis since its amalgamation in 1914, blaming the country's woes on the emergence of what he termed “urban bandits” in leadership positions.
Speaking in Abuja on Saturday at a public lecture marking the 60th birthday of former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, El-Rufai criticized the repeated election of “incompetent leaders” who, he said, are unprepared to tackle the country’s deep-rooted challenges.
The lecture, themed ‘Weaponisation of Poverty as a Means of Underdevelopment: A Case Study of Nigeria’, served as a platform for the former FCT Minister to deliver a scathing assessment of Nigeria’s current political trajectory.
“Nigeria is in its biggest trouble since 1914, and that is why we are together working and conspiring to build a coalition to take Nigeria back on track because it is off track,” El-Rufai declared.
He added that the country’s decline stems not from the activities of armed bandits in rural areas, but from individuals in high office who exploit power without any vision for development.
“It has turned to this level because we have allowed bandits — not the ones in the bushes — but the ones in the urban areas, called the urban bandits, to take over leadership,” he said.
El-Rufai did not mince words as he blamed the electorate for consistently recycling failed leaders.
“I believe that the problem we have is that we just get incompetent people, and we hand over leadership to them. Most of them don’t really know what to do. They just know how to grab power but don’t know what to do with it,” he added.
He called on Nigerians to break the cycle by electing leaders with the competence, capability, capacity, and commitment to move the country forward.
The event drew notable political figures, civil society actors, and academics, all reflecting on the dangers of poverty as a tool of political control and national stagnation.
Lagos Reporters will continue to monitor the evolving political landscape and bring you in-depth analysis, accountability journalism, and updates on efforts by various stakeholders to reshape Nigeria’s democratic future.0 Kommentare 0 Anteile 59 Ansichten 0 Vorschau -

10 messages you need to hear today:
If you don't separate yourself from your distractions. Your distractions will separate you from your goals and the life you want.
You don't have to prove anything to anyone. Ever.
Make your moves. Keep your focus.
Wasted time is worse than wasted money. Who you invest your time with matters.
Winners are not people who never fail. They are people that never quit.
The choices you make today will determine the life you live tomorrow.
None of us sit high enough to look down on anyone. Be humble.
If you combine patience with a strong work ethic, you have a recipe for unstoppable success.
The wound might not be your fault, but the healing is your responsibility.
You'll carry yourself differently when your confidence is sourced from your own belief and not validation from someone else.
You can't build up your life when you are surrounded by people who try to tear it down.
Think about this...!
