  • 2027: 22 APC governors endorse Tinubu as sole presidential candidate
    By : Terhemba Daka, Abuja
    Date: 22 May 2025

All the governors of the All Progressive Congress (APC), under the auspices of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), on Thursday, passed a vote of confidence on President Bola Tinubu.

The Forum, represented by its Chairman, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who spoke on behalf of all the Progressive Governors present at the National Summit of the APC held at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja, also initiated the motion for adoption of Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate of the APC for the 2027 general elections.

The Vice Chairman of the PGF and Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani, was quick to join Governor Uzodimma on the podium to second the motion for the adoption of Tinubu as APC presidential candidate for the 2027 poll.

Uzodimma thereafter put the motion to vote before the participants at the National Summit, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio; members of the National Assembly, serving and former governors, and APC members from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, who, in a voice vote followed by a standing ovation, adopted President Tinubu for a second term in office come 2027.

This endorsement aligns with earlier support from other APC blocs, including a recent vote of confidence from North Central governors.

The move signals growing intra-party consensus behind Tinubu’s bid for a second term.

  • WHO IS JESUS?

    In Chemistry
    He turned water to wine.

    In Biology.
He was born without the normal conception.

    In Physics.
He disapproved the law of gravity when He ascended into heaven.

    In Economics.
    He disapproved the law of
diminishing return by feeding 5000 men with two fishes & 5 loaves of bread.

    In Medicine.
He cured the sick and the blind without administering a single dose of drugs.

    In History.
He is the beginning and the end.

    In Government.
He said that He shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace.

    In Religion.
He said no one comes to the Father except through Him.

    So, Who is He?
    He is Jesus!

    The Greatest Man in History.

    Jesus had no servants.
    yet they called Him Master.

    Had no degree.
    yet they called Him Teacher.

    Had no medicines.
    yet they called Him Healer.

    He had no army.
    yet kings feared Him.

    He won no military battles.
    yet He conquered the world.

    He committed no crime.
    yet they crucified Him.

He was buried in a tomb.
    yet He lives today.

    He is the only way.
    The only truth.
    And the only life.

Whoever is yet to meet this Jesus is missing out on a whole lot of things

  • Dangote Refinery introduces N10 rebate on petrol purchases
    By : Guardian Nigeria
    Date: 12 May 2025

The Dangote Petrochemicals Refinery has implemented a N10 rebate on the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, reducing the effective cost for its customers to N825 per litre.

It was gathered on Monday that while marketers are still purchasing petrol at the publicly announced ex-gantry price of N835 per litre, they receive a N10 rebate after loading and evacuating the product from the refinery.

The adjustment is not an official reduction but is seen as a covert price change, allowing Dangote’s customers and marketers to sell the product at a lower price range of N830 to N835 per litre, which undercuts the prices of importing marketers and private depot owners.

This move follows a series of price reductions last month, when the Dangote refinery reduced its ex-gantry price by N45 within a week, lowering it from N880 to N835 per litre.

This adjustment came after the restart of the Naira-for-Crude agreement with local refiners.

NIGERIA, OTHERS HIT AS UK ENDS FOREIGN CARE WORKER RECRUITMENT

    BY: AGENCY REPORT
    Date;11th may 2025

The United Kingdom will stop recruiting care workers from overseas this year, a move expected to significantly affect countries like Nigeria that have supplied a substantial portion of the UK’s care workforce.

Several countries, including the UK, Germany, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and the USA, have specific visa programmes that allow Nigerian citizens to work as caregivers in their healthcare systems.

These programmes generally necessitate a job offer, appropriate qualifications, and proof of English language skills, and often provide a route to permanent residency.

The annual salaries for care workers in these nations vary based on the country and experience level, ranging from approximately £14,000 to €64,000.

However, the UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, on Sunday, announced the country will end the programme, stating it forms part of a broader crackdown on migration.

“It is time to end that care worker recruitment from abroad,” she said in a BBC report, adding that care firms will instead be required to hire British nationals or renew the visas of migrant workers already residing in the country.

The Labour-led government is set to unveil a comprehensive immigration reform plan on Monday aimed at reducing net migration, with projections indicating the reforms could cut up to 50,000 lower-skilled and care worker entries over the next year.

The decision follows rising political pressure to curb migration numbers, which peaked at a record 906,000 in June 2023 and remained high at 728,000 last year.

While the full details of the immigration White Paper are yet to be released, Cooper explained that the threshold for skilled work visas will increase to graduate-level qualifications. Temporary shortage visas will also be narrowed, and additional requirements will be introduced for employers to invest in domestic training.

“These measures are part of a fundamental shift in our immigration system. We are setting up plans for a substantial reduction in net migration,” Cooper said. However, she stressed that no numerical targets would be set, arguing they “undermined the credibility” of previous government policies.

The government will also impose stricter standards on universities admitting international students. “We are making some changes, particularly around the standards and the compliance for universities,” Cooper said, citing issues with non-completion and visa overstays.

According to the BBC, the decision to end overseas recruitment for care workers comes after a sharp drop in Health and Care Worker visa applications, from 18,300 in August 2023 to just 1,700 by April 2024. That decline followed the government’s earlier move to bar applicants from bringing dependents and its April 9 rule requiring firms to show evidence they had tried to recruit domestically.

Under the new measures, care providers must now recruit from within the UK, including from a pool of over 10,000 care workers whose sponsorships have been cancelled.

Cooper also pledged to introduce a fair pay agreement for care workers to improve recruitment within the UK, saying the goal is to make the sector more appealing to domestic workers.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp, while agreeing with the plan to end overseas care worker recruitment, argued the Labour proposals did not go far enough. “This is too little. We need an annual migration cap,” he said, noting that the Conservative Party would press Parliament to vote on such a cap this week.

Liberal Democrats social care spokesperson Helen Morgan criticised the move, calling it insufficient to resolve ongoing staff shortages. “The government is tinkering around the edges yet failing to properly tackle the crisis in our social care,” she said.

Labour’s announcement has also been linked to political pressure from Reform UK, which gained ground in the recent local elections. Reform leader Nigel Farage claimed the proposed immigration laws were a reaction to his party’s surge in the polls. “This new legislation is only happening because Reform is leading,” he said, warning Labour’s approach would fail because it did not fully address the issue of assimilation.

  • Export volume surges by 30 per cent in Apapa port

APM Terminals Apapa has recorded over 30 per cent increase in export volumes in a single month, its highest since commencing operations in 2006.

In April 2025, the terminal handled 8,687 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of export cargo, representing a significant rise of over 30 per cent compared to the 6,606 TEUs recorded in April 2024.

The Terminal Manager at APM Terminals Apapa, Steen Knudsen, said the terminal has witnessed a steady increase in export volumes over the past four years.

He noted that the terminal handled 53,807 TEUs in 2022, which rose to 70,432 TEUs in 2023 and 77,631 TEUs in 2024.

Knudsen highlighted the positive trend of consistent growth in Nigeria’s export volumes, emphasising that this development significantly benefits the country’s trade balance.

Knudsen emphasised that it is advantageous for Nigerian shippers when vessels depart the country’s ports fully loaded with exports, adding that minimising empty departures positively impacts the overall cost of imports into Nigeria.

He attributed the upward trend to strategic enhancements implemented at the terminal.

“Our goal aligns with the Federal Government’s vision of transforming Nigeria into an export-driven economy. To support this, we launched a new rail service in February to expedite the movement of goods from the hinterland to Apapa Port,” he stated.

Knudsen added that the terminal’s expanded yard capacity for exports and the introduction of dedicated truck lanes have streamlined operations, reduced dwell time for export cargo, and ensured timely vessel departures.

Expressing appreciation for inter-agency collaboration, Knudsen commended the Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigerian Railway Corporation, and other key stakeholders, stating that their unwavering support enables the terminal to consistently deliver top-tier service to its customers.

  • *AKSG Cautions Sterling Oil to Revert to Lawful Land Allotment or Face Sanctions*

The Akwa Ibom State Government has issued a stern warning to Sterling Oil Exploration Company following violations of terms of land grant and unlawful encroachment beyond its legally assigned portion in Eastern Obolo and surrounding communities in the State.

In a strongly worded letter dated Friday, April 4, 2025, and signed by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Uko Udom, SAN, the State Government expressed deep displeasure over the company’s illegal operations and disregard for regulatory provisions.

The letter mandated Sterling Oil to, within seven (7) days, submit all documentation relating to its land acquisitions and Right of Way approvals in Akwa Ibom State to the Office of the Attorney General. The company is also directed to immediately restore all blocked canals and waterways, and to desist from any future interference with natural water channels.

Furthermore, Sterling Oil is required to produce a certified copy of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) report that was submitted in pursuit of regulatory approvals for its operations.

The Government emphasized that these measures do not preclude further enforcement actions.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting citizens and host communities affected by the company’s activities and upholding the legal frameworks guiding the Oil and Gas Free Zone under which Sterling Global operates.

While reiterating its pro-business stance, the Government warned that corporate interests must not override the rights, welfare, and ecological integrity of Akwa Ibom communities.

The State remains resolute in ensuring that all operators within its territory strictly adhere to the rule of law and sustainable development practices.
