Basic Principles for Newly Weds who want to enjoy the first years of their marriage.
As newly weds, you need to understand that how you make your bed in the first months and year after the wedding, is how you will lay on it for the rest of your married life together.
The foundations of intimacy, prayer, trust and honour you build around your home becomes the premise for which other things will be built.
Never play with the first few months of your marriage, never! It will cost you the joy and happiness of the years to come.
Many couples never recover from the complacency of their first year, please learn the following uncommon wisdom and apply them righteously if you are a newly wed, or soon to be one, these are best practices for a Christian home;
1. The first year of marriage is for couple bonding; spend time together as much as possible, enjoy yourselves, travel, have date nights, go on mini monthly vacations, get to know and understand each other better, annoy each other, and get to master how you each respond under anger and tension.
2. Keep family members away from your marriage in the first year. This season is just for you two to bond and understand each other. All you've learnt during premarital courtship is good, but it's different when you start living together in the same house. You can have family and friends over for the weekend or short stays, but never permit long stays for any reason immediately after the wedding, especially from family members.
3. Build a solid prayer regimen as a couple in your first days after the wedding. Don't postpone or procrastinate on this one at all. Establish your prayer devotions times, bible study days, fasting consecration, etc, and start pushing yourself to be disciplined with your regimen immediately. Hear me, if you delay for the purpose of enjoying your life to start later, it will be very difficult for you to regain that fire you started with in courtship, ask other married couples they will tell you the truth.
4. Choose your friends wisely in this new season of your life. Pick your family friends like you are picking your heavenly race partner. Friends who are friends to both of you. Friends who will support your marriage and look after the interest of your spouse. Remember that bad friends corrupt good morals, one of the reasons why newly weds stop growing in marriage is because of the association they got entangled in after the wedding, friends without a passion or drive for excellence.
5. Submit yourselves to a God ordained mentor please. Marriage cannot be done in isolation. You cannot run this race alone, Bible says to follow those who have obtained the promise through faith and patience. It's Biblical to submit to authority, someone who can call you two to order when you are falling away, someone who can hold you two accountable and to a high standard. Someone you will both agree to talk to and confide in as the only legal third party counsel after the Holy Spirit. This practice is not a cliche, don't listen to people who have demonized mentorship. This figure doesn't have to be a Pastor or an Apostle, he or she could be a counsellor you both can trust, or even an elderly couple that can guide you.
6.Start saving immediately, don't wait to have all the pastures before you start putting money away for emergencies. Open a savings account with both signatures and start saving. If the trust is top notch then one of you can volunteer your abandoned account for this purpose. Open an account to save for the kids too, do not wait until they arrive before you plan for their future, through in some spare money into the account every month, it will give you financial peace for when their school needs arises.
7. Deligate house duties and assign roles. This will reduce your fights by 70% , no exergerations. Each of you knowing what is expected, and whose job it is to do what. You know this is flexible, you will need to cover up for each other where necessary, but it will bless your marriage to have shared roles and responsibilities around the house.
Apply this for now, I'll share more wisdom on this much later.
