• Seven 7 poultry rule for your farm

Do you have passion for poultry and really wish to stay long in the business? then . Obey these rules

    * Rule (1)
Only order for birds you can conveniently take care of this is the most important rule of all

Instead of sticking 500 birds and the struggle to feed them or give them medication. Buy 200 .feed and give them good medication.

Trust me you'll make more profit than keeping 500 and struggling to feed and give the medication. If this happens. You'll battle with stunted growth recurrent morbidity or diseases outbreaks and high mortality

    * rule (2)

Never borrow money to start poultry business unless you are an expert

Of course. There is no expert in poultry business in fact. We learn everyday every stock you take in will always teach you something different. However. Haven learn from all the different characteristics displayed by each stock. You get to know more and won't be excited when challenges come. You'll know how to handle them without much damage

    * rule (3)

Be vigilant ".the little thing you don't take as anything matters if you want to succeed in poultry. You must take it as a really business. Do you know what a business man does every morning when he gets to his store. He pray . Then open the store and go around to check if everything is in its place he take stock of what he met there and relate with his record yesterday before closing the store. Don't just open your penand start rushing to give your birds feed and water and rush out again. Check around.watch how they behave when you come in .Check what fell and what is no longer in it's place.

    Rule (4)

    Never ignore warning signals

Yes I call them warning signals

    1. bad smell
    2. withdrawal from feed
    3. Moodiness
    4. Withdrawal from water

There are numerous warning signals I can't mention here .in fact they are so many.

A farmer must know how his birds behaves when they see him enter the in the morning. How they behave when he serve them feed.he should know the very active terrors and gentle lambs

If you keep these signals. You'll easily spot when something is not right

    Rule (5)
    Never change feed indiscriminately
I know you do this .yes.you
When farmer's talk about changing feed from this to this and that then this all in the name getting better results. I'm always scared for them.
Whether you are changing from a bad feed to a good one. You most be very careful.
Do you know every change in feed affects your bird negatively first before gradually bringing in the results you don't desire? Most of the time ⏲ you may suffer withdrawal. Coccidiosis, feed wastage. Stree and more

Imagine changing from mash to pellets indiscriminately. Do you know what that means? Have you studied the difference between mash and pelleted feed and the process of digestion?

They may contain the same ingredients but the formulation process varies so is the digestion process

    Note :

I don't mean changing from starter to grower or finisher.but changing from on commercial feed to another. e.g change from chicken/ alam to other brands.

Even whenever you need to change from starter to grower follow the rules 75% starter and 25% grower. 50% grower and 50% starter and finally 75% grower and 25% starter. at the end you change 100% to grower feed . You can follow the same rule whenever you need to change from one phase feed to other. This one works for feed of the same brand too.

Each company use their own unique ingredients to make their feeds although the may give the some nutritional content. Before using any feed for birds. Find out first about the feed and make sure you stick with it

    Rule (6)
Never let your birds run dry of water
Have you heard of heat stress? If it has happened to your birds then you'll understand what I'm saying.
Heat stress can wipe your entire flock. and it may leave your birds vulnerable to all kinds of infections as their immune system get weakened and may take more than 14 days to fully recover.
Your birds can survive 48 hours without feed but they can't survive 7 hours without water. Instead of running out of water . Please. run out of feed

    Rule (7)

If you can't drink that water don't give it to your birds

Some farmers takes chicken as they are just animals and nothing matters. Maybe they're forgotten they are dealing with delicate live animals.

Waterborne diseases are some of the deadliest disease and most difficult to control. Imagine a tiny drop of harmful substance inside the drinking water. It'll contaminate the whole water. If it was feed it may not be that bad please. If you can't drink that water don't give it to your birds. I'm not talking about medication water.

  • Good afternoon everyone, just like the topic says there are majorly two things no man can hide no matter how smart he is and how codes he is.

    The first thing is POVERTY

No matter how good at management a man is, he can never hide poverty because with time it will rear it's ugly heads and become very obvious.

Any man going through financial difficulty, no matter how well he wants to hide it some things will start becoming visible. You don't need a soothsayer to tell you a man is going through hell if he carries bushy hair, faded clothes, worn out slippers.

You can just sit down at a junction and pretend as if you are making calls then mere looking at some people you know they are going through a lot.

That brings us to the saying that poverty is very hard to maintain

    The second one is WEALTH

No matter how well you can hide things, wealth or affluence will show. I didn't give examples when I talked about POVERTY because I don't want to sound inhumane but let me give you a typical example of my friend who once tried to hide wealth.

He served in the north and got retained by a rich northerner who deals with trailer, he was treated well and after like 5 years the man died and our friend was well settled so he relocated to south west.

We normally call him coded due to his lifestyle of trying to hide everything, when he came he established block industry, boutique and poultry but he will still wear cheap clothes.

What gave him out was his fresh looks, nice perfumes and wristwatch always looking cool. He hid it to d extent that even his farm manager had a car already but the CEO is hoping around on bike.

Last last this guy had to buy Toyota big daddy because even the poorest in his clique was using something better, last last we all saw his house and it was one in town, he couldn't just hide it.

So it's obvious you can't hide those two things

  • BRAHMA CHICKENS: WHY MOST PEOPLE WANT THEM

    1. Majestic Size & Appearance – Brahma chickens are known as the "gentle giants" of the chicken world. Their large size, feathered legs, and striking plumage make them stand out in any flock.

    2. Calm & Friendly Temperament – Unlike some breeds that can be aggressive or flighty, Brahmas are docile, friendly, and easy to handle. They make great pets and are ideal for families.

    3. Cold-Hardy & Resilient – Thanks to their dense feathering, Brahmas can withstand colder climates better than many other breeds. They continue laying eggs even in winter, making them a reliable choice.

    4. Consistent Egg Production – Brahma hens lay medium to large brown eggs consistently, even in colder months. While they may not be the most prolific layers, their steady production is appreciated by backyard keepers.

    5. Dual-Purpose Breed – Brahmas are valued for both egg-laying and meat production. Their large body size makes them a good choice for those looking for a breed that serves multiple purposes.

  • PROTECTING your CHICKENS from SNAKES!!

Snakes are usually unexpected but shouldn't be a surprise when found around poultry.
It's important to keep snakes out of your chicken environment to keep the eggs, chicks, & even your chickens safe from snake attacks.

If you have snakes around your poultry, it's one sign that you have rodents in the poultry and most likely eating your chicken's feed.

Here are some of the ways you can implement to avoid these creatures in your homesteads:

    1. RODENT CONTROL:
Rats love chicken feed and snakes love rats and mice. If you have too many rats running around your yard, chances of sighting a snake are high. Rodent control is therefore important. Ensure proper waste management – burn or properly dispose of any litter far away from the fowl run.

Too much garbage lying around is food for rats and junk items around the yard such as rubbles, old roofing sheets and wood piles provide a safe haven for rats and snakes. As you may be aware, rats breed so fast hence attracting the attention of these reptiles which may end up in your fowl run eating the chickens and eggs.

    2. SNAKE REPELLANTS:
Planting snake repellant plants also helps to deter the creatures. These plants emit odours that irritate snakes. Some common examples include marigolds, lemongrass, wormwood, rosemary, thyme, garlic, garden rue and onions. Plant these around the chicken run and yard to provide a protective shield for the birds.

Snake pills from most veterinary shops also help excrete pungent smell that deter these reptiles. Smoke from burning tyres also irritates snakes from settling in the yard. Putting diesel around the perimeter of the yard or fowl run also ensures snakes do not cross the line. You can also put broken bottle pieces around the fowl run to deter snakes from crossing. Spraying a concoction of mahogany tree barks soaked in water around the yard also repels the serpents.

    3. CUT DOWN TALL GRASS:
Ensure grass around the yard and fowl run is cut short at all times. Tall grass and thick bushes provide a safe home or hideout for snakes and even mosquitos.

    4. COVER ANY FOWL RUN OPENINGS:
With the rains around, snakes are constantly looking for dry and warm places to stay. Fowl runs, homes and storerooms provide these ideal conditions. Ensure the fowl run has no openings that allow snakes to enter especially from the roof.

Cover any openings with mesh wire or plaster any holes or cracks where possible. The fowl run should be snake proof to protect the chickens at all times.

    5. PRUNE TREES:
Snakes can climb trees and find ways to enter the fowl run through the roof. Ensure any nearby trees are pruned at all times.

    6. COLLECT EGGS REGULARLY:
Snakes are mostly attracted to eggs more than the chickens. It’s only when chickens seem to be a predator when snakes do attack the birds.

Ensure eggs in nesting boxes are removed regularly during the day and remove the ‘temptation’ for snakes to enter the fowl runs.

    7. KEEPING GUINEA FOWLS:
Those with guinea fowls (hanga) can testify these birds are very alert and make a lot of noise when they see intruders. Guinea fowls are not afraid of snakes and can fight off and kill these reptiles with ease.

However, guinea fowls can also end up bullying chickens hence you need to introduce them pretty early to ensure they can co-exist well.

    8. CATS AND DOGS:
Cats are good at reducing rodent population and even fighting off snakes. Dogs too can help in spotting such intruders. Having these in the yard is a sure help when it comes to managing rodents and keeping snakes away.

    CONCLUSION:
In the event you find snakes in the fowl run, it is always advisable to enlist the services of professional snake handlers than trying to manage this on your own.

Some snake species are poisonous and can harm you. Snake handlers know how to catch and rehabilitate these reptiles. Snakes have a purpose in the ecosystem, there is need to preserve them hence the need to call professionals for help.

  • Poultry Housing Guide: Setting Up for Broilers vs Layers

Once you've decided whether to raise broilers or layers, the next step is building the right type of house for your chickens. Proper housing helps reduce disease, supports growth or egg production, and protects your investment. But since broilers and layers have different lifecycles and purposes, their housing needs are also different.

    Broiler Housing Requirements

Broilers grow quickly and are usually raised for 6 to 8 weeks before slaughter. Because of this short period, their housing is simpler and cheaper to build. A common system is deep litter, where birds live on the floor covered with sawdust, wood shavings, or rice husks.

    * Space needed: Broilers need about 1 square foot (0.1 square meter) per bird. For example, a 10x20 foot (3x6 meter) house can hold around 200 broilers.
    * Ventilation: Broilers generate a lot of heat and moisture. Proper air movement through windows or ventilation holes is necessary to avoid heat stress and diseases like respiratory infections.
    * Lighting: Broilers often grow faster under continuous light. Many farmers use 23 to 24 hours of light per day for the first few weeks to encourage feeding.
    * Temperature: Young broiler chicks need 32 to 35°C during the first week, reduced weekly until it reaches around 22 to 24°C.

Because broilers are raised in batches, their housing can be cleaned and reused every cycle. The floors must be cleaned, disinfected, and refilled with fresh litter.

    Layer Housing Requirements

Layers start laying eggs around 18 to 20 weeks of age and continue for about 1.5 to 2 years. This means their housing must support long-term health, egg laying, and comfort.

    * Space needed: Layers require more space—typically 1.5 to 2 square feet (0.15 to 0.18 square meters) per bird in cages, or about 3 to 4 https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029Vb5QG8sJP20xMjnTVu3z/461

  • The Real Reasons We Don’t Eat Turkey Eggs

Turkeys often find themselves at the center of our plates, much like many other domesticated birds classified as poultry. We rely on these animals for a range of products, from bedding and clothing to, most commonly, food. Eggs, in particular, are a staple in many diets. But it got us thinking: why don’t we eat turkey eggs?

In the wild, a turkey hen will build itself a ground nest somewhere sheltered in the forest. She then begins a two-week laying window, during which time an egg can pop out every 24 to 32 hours, usually resulting in a clutch of nine to 13, says the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

It’s plenty to be getting on with for a new turkey mom, who will pop off between egg laying to feed so that she can successfully incubate her babies. For egg farmers, however, it’s just not enough.

Why don’t we eat turkey eggs?
In the United States alone there are around 2,500 turkey farms. That’s a lot of turkeys, and presumably a lot of eggs, but they don’t enter the egg market because, frankly, they’re not worth it.

A healthy chicken can lay an egg almost daily, making the *ahem* paltry 32-hour turnover of a turkey seem like a poor yield. Add to that, it takes turkeys seven months to mature to egg-laying age compared to chicken’s five-month waiting period, and they just aren’t as attractive a source for poultry farmers hoping to sell eggs.

    Are turkey eggs edible?
Turkey eggs are edible, just ask turkey farmers. According to Modern Farm, they’re reported to taste very similar to a chicken egg, only a bit bigger with a tougher shell and thicker membrane.

    The weird world of eggs
Slightly bigger size, tougher membrane, thicker shell – the turkey egg, while expensive to farm, is really quite normal at the end of the day. The same cannot be said of penguin eggs.

According to Robert Headland, senior associate of the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge, UK, the taste of a penguin egg is an acquired one, being “somewhat fishy as krill form a major part of the diet”. Donald Morrison, who lives in the Falklands Islands, told IFLScience they make a cracking pavlova, but it’s the boiled eggs that are really something.

Boil a chicken egg and you find yourself with that satisfying white oval, but boil a penguin egg and you’ll be faced with a ghostly orb partially concealing an orange ball. It all comes down to the ratio of glycoproteins they contain, according to the Polar Guidebook. While chicken eggs are rich in mostly ovalbumin, penguin eggs contain 25 percent penalbumin, which helps them to survive in the region’s freezing temperatures.

As you may be aware, rats breed so fast hence attracting the attention of these reptiles which may end up in your fowl run eating the chickens and eggs. 2. SNAKE REPELLANTS: Planting snake repellant plants also helps to deter the creatures. 3. CUT DOWN TALL GRASS: Ensure grass around the yard and fowl run is cut short at all times. Tall grass and thick bushes provide a safe home or hideout for snakes and even mosquitos. 4. COVER ANY FOWL RUN OPENINGS: With the rains around, snakes are constantly looking for dry and warm places to stay. 5. PRUNE TREES: Snakes can climb trees and find ways to enter the fowl run through the roof. Ensure any nearby trees are pruned at all times. 6. COLLECT EGGS REGULARLY: Snakes are mostly attracted to eggs more than the chickens. It’s only when chickens seem to be a predator when snakes do attack the birds. Ensure eggs in nesting boxes are removed regularly during the day and remove the ‘temptation’ for snakes to enter the fowl runs. 7. KEEPING GUINEA FOWLS: Those with guinea fowls (hanga) can testify these birds are very alert and make a lot of noise when they see intruders. Guinea fowls are not afraid of snakes and can fight off and kill these reptiles with ease. However, guinea fowls can also end up bullying chickens hence you need to introduce them pretty early to ensure they can co-exist well. 8. CATS AND DOGS: Cats are good at reducing rodent population and even fighting off snakes. Dogs too can help in spotting such intruders. Having these in the yard is a sure help when it comes to managing rodents and keeping snakes away. CONCLUSION: In the event you find snakes in the fowl run, it is always advisable to enlist the services of professional snake handlers than trying to manage this on your own. Some snake species are poisonous and can harm you. Snake handlers know how to catch and rehabilitate these reptiles. Snakes have a purpose in the ecosystem, there is need to preserve them hence the need to call professionals for help. #SHARE this post to educate others!😊📝 •~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~• Keep learning with iMaDe FARMs 💚🤍🧡 •~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~• Remember to follow our WhatsApp Channel for More Farming Tips!👇😍 🧡🤍💚 https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029Va46SjbGJP8JeCLgTh3a
