FIRST STEPS IN OVERCOMING FOOD ADDICTION

Overcoming a food addiction can be very challenging. However, some people find it helpful to write a list of pros and cons to understand how this process may affect them.

Pros: These may include
1. losing weight (if that is your goal),
2. living longer,
3. having more energy, and
4. feeling better every day.

Cons: These may include
1. being unable to eat ice cream with family,
2. no cookies during the holiday season, and 3. having to explain food choices.

Write everything down, no matter how peculiar or vain it may seem.

Then, compare the two lists and consider if it’s worth it.

If the answer is a resounding “yes,” be assured that it’s the right decision.

A few things can help prepare for giving up processed foods and make the transition easier:

Trigger foods: Write down a list of the foods that cause cravings. These are the trigger foods you can try to avoid.

Fast food restaurants:

Make a list of fast food restaurants that serve healthier foods and note which menu items suit you better. This may prevent a relapse when you’re hungry and not in the mood to cook.

What to eat: Think about what foods you can eat so you’re prepared to make dietary changes.

Preferably, choose healthier foods that you like and already eat regularly.

Pros and cons:

Consider making several copies of the pro-and-con list. Keep a copy in the kitchen, glove compartment, and purse or wallet.


Overcoming a food addiction is difficult. Adding hunger and restrictions to the mix is likely to make things harder.

Consult with a nutrition or healthcare professional to assist you in making a plan.

My son Andrew will never get married. He won’t have children. He won’t drive a car or experience many of the milestones we take for granted.

But he is happy. And he is healthy.
And to me, that’s everything.

When a stranger gives him a smile, it lights up my entire day.
When a girl glances at him kindly, joy rushes through his whole body like a wave of sunshine.

It doesn’t take much to be deeply, profoundly human.

Let me tell you a story.

At a party held at a school for children with special needs, one father stood up to speak.
What he said stayed with everyone who heard it.

After thanking the staff who worked with such devotion, he paused and shared a reflection:

So he gently approached one of the boys and asked:

“Would it be okay if Herbert joined the game?”

The President of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traoré, has imposed a law that fines women two million CFA francs and sentences them to life imprisonment for exposing their nudity on social media.

He stated that such actions pose a major threat to society, as they distract people with immoral activities and weaken their zeal for religion and patriotism.

Furthermore, he ordered the shutdown of all pornographic websites in Burkina Faso, as directed by the president himself.

In addition to suspending all film productions that display nudity, Ibrahim Traoré demanded the closure of all obscene websites in the country.

He stated, “Africa is known for respecting its culture and religion. I do not support the kind of backwardness seen in the West.” He therefore urged all filmmakers to be cautious and modest in accordance with religious and cultural values.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, Internet addiction can include three or more of the following:

The user needs to spend ever-increasing amounts of time online to feel the same sense of satisfaction.

If they can’t go online, the user experiences unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, moodiness and compulsive fantasising about the Internet. Using the Internet relieves these symptoms.

The user turns to the Internet to cope with negative feelings such as guilt, anxiety or depression.

The user spends a significant amount of time engaging in other activities related to the Internet (such as researching internet vendors, internet books).

The user neglects other areas of life (such as relationships, work, school and leisure pursuits) in favour of spending time on the Internet.

The user is prepared to lose relationships, jobs or other important things in favour of the Internet.
