SCRIPTURE: For the LORD thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over thee. DEUTERONOMY 15:6. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Borrowing empties tomorrow into today. It has been established that every commandment God gives to His people is for their benefit, and not for the benefit of God. The Scripture says that His commandments are not grievous (1John 5:3). When He said the children of Israel should circumcise their children on the eighth day, someone may ask, “Why not on the sixth, seventh or ninth day? Why must it be on the eighth day?” Now, it was said to have been discovered scientifically some years ago that Prothrombin, a clothing factor, was highest in the blood on the eighth day after birth such that when you do circumcision on the eight day, the tendency of bleeding to death is highly minimized. So, whenever God tells you not to do anything, it is not for His own sake. Our anchor scripture reveals another commandment from God which says, thou shalt not borrow. It is both a prophecy and a command. And it is for our benefit. Today, we shall be looking at some of the dangers of borrowing. These are the reasons why borrowing should be avoided. 1. The mentality of borrowing is the mentality of scarcity. You must think scarcity before you can think of borrowing. And mentality determines reality (Proverbs 23:7). The mentality of borrowing will produce the reality of scarcity. 2. The act of borrowing establishes financial servitude. Proverbs 22:7 says, The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. So, borrowing establishes a person in financial servitude. 3. Borrowing is an anti-covenant operation that frustrates the working of the covenant. In the covenant, you are to lend not to borrow, you are to give, not to beg (Deuteronomy 15:6). If you are a tither, a giver, and a Sower, but you are also a beggar and a borrower, it is plus one, minus one; it is counterproductive. The effect of your giving is nullified by your action because borrowing is looking for alternative sources of supplies other than God, your only Supplier. 4. Borrowing empties tomorrow into today. When you borrow, you spend the money that you have not yet earned; it destroys the future. What belongs to tomorrow you spend it today, so when tomorrow arrives, you are empty. Beloved, do not finish tomorrow before it arrives. Avoid borrowing if you want to reach where God wants you to reach. The only thing you are permitted to owe people is love (Romans 13:8). Remember this: Borrowing empties tomorrow into today. ASSIGNMENT(S): 1. Avoid the temptation of borrowing. 2. Trust in God for supplies; never look up to any man. 3. Refuse to eat up everything that enters your hands; save a portion of it. PRAYER: Lord, I look up to You for my daily bread. I refuse to be a victim of the spell of borrowing. *KINGDOM LIFE DEVOTIONAL* TOPIC: *CREATING A MEMORIAL BEFORE GOD(PART2)* TEXT: *_Mark 14:3-9 (KJV)_* ♦️♦️And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head. And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her. And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her. ♦️Brethren, apart from prayers, according to what was said about Cornelius in our yesterday's text, there are also some strategic kingdom investments that stand before God as a memorial. This refers to those acts of generosity, done particularly towards the poor and for the advancement of the kingdom of God. 👉There is a dimension of giving that is merely transactional. They are givings that are characterized by an expectation of receiving something in return, whether a tangible item or a social benefit or recognition. And there's a giving that is sacrificial and strategic, designed to become a memorial. This is when you give, not out of left- overs, but out of a true heart of worship and partnership with God's agenda, then,your giving becomes a memorial. This is not just all about money, but your heart, your obedience, and your love for God's purposes. God alway track such investments. You can assess your givings now, of what stuff they are, to God and to others? 👉The woman in our text gave out of the abundance of her love for Jesus, to the envying of the people. She poured on Jesus a very expensive fragrant oil. Her giving was an act of devotion and extravagant display of love and worship towards Jesus. Her act is often interpreted as a symbol of her repentance and a pre-emptive anointing of Jesus for his burial. The disciples' objections to the "waste" of the perfume emphasize the high value and preciousness of the ointment. She gave Jesus her best, not her least. 👉Any act of kindness, compassion and service to humanity that is beyond formal or normal giving, registers as a memorial before God. When you are a conduit of God's love to the hurting, the broken, and the marginalized, you are not just serving man, you are serving God(Matt.25:40). The simple answer is that you need the Holy Spirit. In (1 Samuel 16:1,11-13), God told Samuel, "I am sending you to Jesse's house because I want to raise a king there." Jesse didn't present David initially because the entire family believed that David was not the kind of person who could become a king. However, as soon as David came, God said, "That is him." Samuel poured oil on David's head, and the Bible says that the Spirit of God came upon him. When the Spirit of God came upon the shepherd boy, he became who God wanted him to be - a king. God has a great plan for your life, but you need the power of the Holy Spirit over your life to fulfil it. In (1 Samuel 10:6), Samuel told Saul that the Spirit of God would come on him and he would prophesy; the Spirit of God turned an ordinary boy into a prophet. In Judges 13:1-25, an angel told a woman that she was going to give birth to a son and that he would be a judge in Israel. After that son was born, the Bible says that the Spirit of God began to move him. When the Spirit of God comes on someone, the fellow becomes who God says he or she will be. In today's Bible reading, when the angel told Mary, "You will have a son, and He will be the son of the Highest," she asked, "How can this be since I know no man?" The angel gave her the ultimate solution to impossible cases: The Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit came upon her, she did the impossible; she conceived God and birthed Him into the world. She became a vessel unto honour because the Holy Spirit came upon her. Are you struggling with sin? Do you find it difficult to spend time in God's presence? Do you lack the fire and zeal to live a holy life? Do you keep going back to your vomit of addictions? Cry out for the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is symbolised as fire, and when fire visits a place, nothing remains the same. When the Holy Spirit came upon Saul, the persecutor, he was changed into Paul, the apostle. Beloved, the Holy Spirit sanctifies vessels for the Father's highest purposes, and you need Him to become a chosen vessel unto honour. #c12• WHY ALTAR SERVERS DESERVE MORE THAN JUST A NOD AFTER MASS: Let’s address one of the most overlooked ministries in the Church: the Altar Servers. Before I became a priest, I didn’t give much thought to altar servers. In fact, I saw them as just children in oversized cassocks, trailing incense and getting in the way. One is late, one is still tying his cincture during the Kyrie, another forgets to bring the missal to the altar, and one brave soul always drops the bell mid-consecration like it’s part of the liturgy. But then ordination happened—and like Saul on the road to Damascus, my eyes were opened. My dear people of God, our altar servers are the silent strength behind every Mass. After celebrating Mass abroad, where the priest does everything from the crucifix to the chalice without assistance, I began to miss our lively, sometimes chaotic but genuinely dedicated Nigerian altar servers. Now back home, I’ve seen another side of the story. These young boys and girls come early to church, rehearse tirelessly, and stand throughout Mass—rain or shine, hunger or heat—just to make sure the sanctuary runs smoothly. And still, at the end of Mass, we hear: “Thank you to the chairman of the harvest, the MC, our distinguished guests…” And the altar servers? Not even a “God bless you.” Let me say this clearly: DEAR ALTAR SERVERS, WE SEE YOU. WE HONOUR YOU. AND WE THANK YOU. Some of you trek long distances to make it to morning Mass before 6:00 AM. Some wear torn cassocks and serve with dignity. Some go home hungry after multiple liturgies. Yet, you continue to serve—no complaints, no payment, just love for God. If you’ve ever admired how orderly the Mass flows, thank an altar server. If you’ve ever seen the priest lift the chalice with reverence, thank the one who passed it at the right time. If you’ve ever been moved by the incense rising during solemn liturgy, thank the server whose arm is tired but still swinging with grace. To all parishioners reading this: Stop treating altar servers like “background children.” They are liturgical ministers —the youth backbone of the Church. Let’s train them , clothe them properly, and respect their service. Buy them new cassocks. Let them look like the soldiers of Christ they are—not extras from a church drama. Buy proper liturgical materials. Sponsor their formation. Teach them reverence, and they’ll teach the Church discipline. To priests: Say “thank you” after Mass. Even if they forgot to ring the bell or fumbled the incense. At least they showed up— SOME ADULTS DON’T. And to every altar server reading this: May God bless your hands, your feet, your service, and your silent sacrifices. May He reward your hidden devotion, and may your life continue to reflect the dignity of the sanctuary.
