For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard him, he marvelled, and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. Today’s Reflection

The humility of the centurion is noteworthy. His expression has been imprinted on our hearts through our Eucharistic worship when we pray: “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you…” Apart from humility, we see in the centurion the extraordinary love of one who goes to Jesus on behalf of a servant. We see his great respect; his awareness that a Jew who entered his home would be considered as defiled. We see a wise person making good use of his own experience in coming to understand others. Finally, we see the quality that amazes Jesus: his faith. We can discern a composite of virtues in the centurion. Let us reflect in gratitude upon our own stores of these qualities of heart, mind, reason and will, and how we might use them more creatively to build God’s Kingdom.

Agada....

This was the extent my ancestors got to building their own bed called "Elu akwa" when complete with the grass filled mattress. I don't know the history of its creation so I can't venture there.

This piece of artistry is already extinct even in the most rural of Igboland.

This wooden structure itself is called Agada in my Mbaise dialect, and few other Igbo speaking areas I know.

When the Igbo say that "Iko anaghị eku nwa, ihe o ketere bu aziiza elu ákwà", meaning that "a concubinus doesn't make paternity claims rather his only gain from the relationship is the heat of sexual intercourse." This is the"elu ákwà we talk about.

But seeing this photograph which I got from the walls of my brother Kelechi Sam Nwagbaraocha brought up something else.

We have a saying that "Agada gbachiri ụzọ" this basically means the Agada that blocked the door.

Those days, the doors of the thatched roofed houses our ancestors built were tiny, and it was always a rigourous spectacle either taking the bed inside the room or bringing it out.

And this process was always a real battle as it often gets stuck on the door blocking entrance and exit.

It is from this obstruction that the phrase "Agada gbachiri ụzọ" came from.

I know over the years some have used that term in religious contexts to refer to higher beings or even God as "the one who blocks the way".

Some have also used it to refer to someone who tries to obstruct the success of others. Or someone who actively tries to undermine or sabotage the success of others, often after they have achieved something themselves.

However, I have always wanted to know the context in which Chief Ozumba Mbadiwe took the title of Agada Gbachiri Ụzọ. Was it about his role in the NCNC or NPN?

First, Mbadiwe didn't have the key to the River Niger like The Great Zik, and he also didn't have the power to trick the Mamiwata into a bottle and locking her up, after which he crushed her to make the popular powder 'Saturday Night'. If you don't know about these stories then I am your real elder.

So who knows why Ozumba Mbadiwe was "Agada Gbachiri Ụzọ"?

1. It Must Be on a Saturday
Not true. You can get married on any day of the week. In fact, the traditional wedding day used to be Thursday — hence the name “Wednesday” (i.e., Wed the next day). Your wedding is not about the day but the covenant.

2. It Must Be Inside the Church Auditorium
You don’t have to wed at the altar or sanctuary. A pastor’s office, a chapel, or even a simple hall can host your church wedding, as long as it’s officiated properly before witnesses.

3. You Must Wear a White Gown
White is a tradition, not a commandment. You can wear native attire, modest colors, or even a family dress style. Purity is a heart condition, not fabric color.

4. You Must Have a Bridal Train
A bridal train is for aesthetics, not necessity. What truly matters is bridal training, not bridal train. Invest in marriage preparation more than wedding decoration.

5. You Must Have a Grand Reception
Receptions are great for celebration, but not mandatory. If you can’t afford one, a thanksgiving service or light refreshment is more than enough.

6. You Must Wear a Wedding Ring
Rings are symbolic, not spiritual. The core of Christian wedding is the exchange of vows and blessings in God’s presence. Rings are an outward sign, but not a spiritual requirement.

7. A Wedding Cake Is Compulsory
A cake is lovely but optional. If you don’t have funds for it, don’t stretch yourself. It’s better to have a strong financial foundation than an extravagant dessert.

8. Only White Gowns Represent Purity
Purity is not a fabric issue. Wearing pink, gold, ivory, or traditional fabrics does not mean you're impure. God looks at the heart, not the color of your clothing.

9. The Wedding Must Be Loud and Expensive
Some of the best weddings are modest, simple, and intimate. A loud wedding doesn't equal a lasting marriage. Let your focus be love, not luxury.

10. You Must Do Pre-Wedding Photoshoots
Pre-wedding shoots are trendy but not compulsory. Don’t borrow or break your budget just to impress people who won’t help you pay rent after the honeymoon.

11. Bridal Shower Is a Church Requirement
Bridal showers are Hollywood creations, not biblical instructions. Enjoy one if you can afford it, but don’t see it as a spiritual obligation.

12. You Can Be Pregnant and Still Have a Church Wedding
Most Bible-based churches do not conduct weddings for pregnant couples. The idea is to maintain biblical order and present the bride and groom for a new covenant, not with added complications. This doesn’t mean condemnation, but rather a call to do things rightly and in order.

13. You Must Buy a New Wedding Gown
Many reputable stores now rent gowns for a fraction of the price. There's no shame in renting — it’s smart, especially for a dress you’ll likely wear just once.

14. You Must Invite a Huge Crowd
A wedding is not a concert. You don’t need a crowd to validate your union. A few loved ones, your pastor, and your faith are more than enough to begin your journey.

15. Expensive Wedding Equals Lasting Marriage
There is no connection between an expensive wedding and a successful marriage. In fact, financial pressure from a wedding can cause early conflict in marriage. Focus on your future, not impressing guests.

Lastly, dear singles and engaged couples, let wisdom guide you. A church wedding is about covenant, not cosmetics. Don’t fall for societal pressure. Start your marriage on faith, peace, and wise financial decisions.

While rounding up the First Service at the Inoculation for Acceleration Service, Bishop David Abioye humourously shared reasons why some people are not married.

He said, "Take a step! Go and demand for that job. Take a step! Some individuals are due for marriage. Fear, intimidation, he can't talk to a woman. What is in it? 'I want to marry you' Simple. If she says no, look for somebody else. Amen. Believe me, that's what is keeping many people. 'I don't have an Air Conditioner, I don't have a fridge.' Is it a fridge that joins husband and wife? I didn't have a fridge, I have a wife. I didn't even have wedding ring until Saturday morning. If you bought it one year before, one month before, is it not on the wedding day you'll wear it? Why are you troubling yourself?"

He further went on to say nobody would ask to know if you got a gold or silver ring and one can get any ring no matter how cheap it is. When God blesses you, you can upgrade it. He concluded by saying, "Take steps! What is scaring you? Go and face your fear. Take what belongs to you. Go and take what belongs to you!"

Ukraine's Massive Drone Attacks on Russia Has Forced Closure of All Major Airports in Moscow

According to a report by the BBC News on Sunday 20 July, 2025, a wave of Ukrainian drone assaults prompted temporary shutdowns of all major airports in Moscow over the weekend, grounding over 140 flights and forcing more than 130 diversions, Russian aviation authorities reported.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that since Saturday morning, its forces intercepted over 230 drones across various regions, with 27 reportedly neutralized in Moscow's airspace alone. The Kaluga region, southwest of the capital, also experienced significant disruption after 45 drones were intercepted, prompting a temporary closure of Kaluga International Airport.

Tourism officials indicated that Moscow’s airports faced ten closures within 24 hours, underscoring the scale and frequency of the aerial threats. Despite the turmoil, normal operations have since resumed across the affected airports.

Elsewhere, Ukrainian officials reported that Russian air raids killed at least three civilians overnight. In Donetsk, two individuals lost their lives in separate attacks, while a 78-year-old woman died in Sumy after fires consumed residential buildings.

Ukraine’s military stated it successfully downed 18 of 57 drones launched by Russia overnight, with another seven reportedly neutralized by radar interference. The attacks spanned frontline regions, including Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Donetsk.

Amid the rising hostilities, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Russian television, “President Putin has repeatedly spoken of his desire to bring the Ukrainian settlement to a peaceful conclusion as soon as possible.”

In a countergesture, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed restarting negotiations with Russia, expressing willingness to engage directly with President Putin. While previous efforts failed to establish a ceasefire, both sides have exchanged prisoners in the past.

Support for Ukraine surged following an announcement from U.S. President Donald Trump, who pledged advanced weapon deliveries through NATO allies and warned of severe tariffs against Russia unless a peace deal is struck within 50 days.

Responding to Trump’s declaration, Peskov commented on Sunday: “Everyone has grown accustomed to his [Trump’s] rather harsh and straightforward rhetoric.”

URGENT NOTICE: IMMEDIATE CANCELLATION OF 2025 WAEC EXAMINATIONS NATIONWIDE

The Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), regrets to inform the general public, especially students, parents, and school administrators, of the immediate cancellation of the ongoing 2025 WAEC examinations across all states of the federation.

This difficult but necessary decision follows escalating reports of widespread examination malpractice, coordinated leakages of question papers, and unauthorized digital dissemination of exam materials through social media and AI-enhanced cheating tools. Investigations by the National Academic Integrity Task Force revealed organized rings operating in multiple states, compromising the validity of the entire examination process.

Key Findings Leading to Cancellation Include:

Leaked exam papers circulating up to 72 hours before scheduled papers.

AI-generated answers and remote cheating tools being used en masse.

Compromised WAEC staff involved in unauthorized distribution.

Over 480 flagged centres with coordinated cheating patterns.


Based on these findings, the integrity of the 2025 May/June WASSCE has been irreversibly compromised, and continuing with the exams would only reward malpractice and discredit the efforts of honest candidates.

Key Directives:

1. All ongoing and pending WAEC examinations from 22nd July 2025 onward are officially cancelled.


2. All previously written papers from May 6th to July 18th, 2025, are declared null and void.


3. A full investigative committee has been set up to prosecute individuals and centres found guilty.


4. A fresh timetable for the rescheduled examinations will be released on Monday, 5th August 2025, after nationwide consultations.


5. WAEC digital systems and supervision protocols will be overhauled ahead of the new examination window.



We understand the distress this may cause our young students and their families. However, we must uphold the sanctity of education in our nation. Candidates are advised to continue preparing and avoid falling prey to fraudulent websites or individuals claiming to offer “expo” or shortcuts.

The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party and former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Saturday, paid a condolence visit to the family of the late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State.

Kwankwaso also visited the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk Umar, where he extended his sympathies to the Daura Emirate Council over the death of the former Nigerian leader.

During the visit, Kwankwaso met with Alhaji Mamman Daura, a close confidant and nephew of the late President, to personally express his condolences.
