The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on 5 August 2025, decorated ACP Aliyu Shaba and CSP Sentome Obi, the 2023 and 2024 winners of the Police Officer of the Year award respectively, with their new ranks. The ceremony took place at the IGP Smart Conference Room, Force Headquarters, Louis Edet House, Abuja.

The promotion and decoration of these officers clearly demonstrates the Force's commitment to acknowledging and rewarding officers who consistently carry out their service to the nation and its citizens exceptionally. The IGP again re-echoed the decision of the Force Management that any officer who wins Police Officer of the Year Award, wins the IGP Commendation Award or has won category award in the last two consecutive years shall be recommended to the Police Service Commission for accelerated promotion.

The IGP seized the opportunity to call on all members of Force that the doors of honour and recognition are wide open, but would only come as a result of hard-work, professionalism, excellence, and service discipline.

In a similar development, the IGP received a delegation of senior officials of the National Pension Commission (PenCom) led by the Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms Omolola B. Oluworaran, and the Managing Director of NPF Pensions Limited, Mr Kolade Morakinyo, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja. The visit included an interactive session which lasted for hours and had in attendance senior officers from the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police and above.

The interactive session critically addressed major concerns of serving and retired officers towards improved retirement benefits. The IGP is optimistic that in no distant time, all the efforts to ameliorate the pitiable conditions of retired officers would yield positive result.

The Inspector-General of Police once again reaffirmed the commitment of the Force to improved welfare packages for both serving and retired officers. He further reiterated the commitment of the leadership of the Force to emplacing a Force that is professionally competent, service-driven, rule of law compliant and people-friendly.

*CLAIM 1: The Myth of 400,000 Police Retirees*

PenCom's argument rests on the absurd claim that funding the pensions of 400,000 police retirees would bankrupt the nation. However, the entire serving strength of the Nigeria Police Force is approximately 371,800 officers. How can the number of retirees be larger than the total number of currently serving personnel? This is a deliberate inflation of figures to create fear and block the Police Exit Bill.

CLAIM 2: The Outrageous ₦3.5 Trillion Annual Cost

In February 2025, the Federal Government announced it had cleared the entire backlog of accrued pension rights for all federal retirees with ₦758 billion. This covered 250,000 retirees from every Ministry, Department, and Agency (MDA). How can PenCom justify a demand for ₦3.5 trillion every single year for the Police alone? This figure is nearly five times the amount needed to clear the national pension backlog. It's a scare tactic, not a realistic financial projection.

In line with the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to sustaining its efforts in internal security through crime prevention and the protection of lives and property across the country, the Nigeria Police Force has recorded several significant breakthroughs across various State Commands in the country, underscoring the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing in dismantling criminal networks and curbing insecurity.

In Katsina State, operatives of the Command acting on a complaint received on February 20, 2025, from one Alhaji Badamasi Bala of Madaci Yan Nono Quarters have cracked a disturbing case of kidnapping involving a 14-year-old girl and her 4-year-old sister. Four months later, the older sister resurfaced and, upon further investigations, she confessed to staging the kidnapping and conspiring with three accomplices, aged 25, 19, and 16, respectively. All suspects have been arrested, and the 4-year-old sister have been rescued unhurt.

In Nasarawa State, following credible intelligence on the movement of a suspected arms trafficker, operatives of the State Police Command launched a swift and strategic operation along the Giza–Kadarko Road in Keana LGA, where a suspicious individual riding an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle was flagged down. Upon sighting the operatives, the suspect abandoned the motorcycle and fled into a nearby bush to evade arrest. A thorough search of the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of one (1) AK-47 rifle, two (2) magazines, and forty-five (45) rounds of 7.62x39mm live ammunition. Efforts are underway to arrest the fleeing suspect.

Similarly, on June 13, 2025, a joint team comprising operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies acting on credible intelligence, conducted a coordinated raid at Kankare and Zurkuda villages in Birnin Kudu LGA, Jigawa State.The operation led to the arrest of seven suspected fraudsters involved in a network of financial crimes. Exhibits recovered from them include 46,100 counterfeit United States Dollars (USD), four (4) POS machines, thirteen (13) Android smartphones, twenty-nine (29) keypad phones, six (6) power banks, two (2) vehicle plate numbers, and various documents suspected to be linked to electronic fraud. All suspects are currently in custody and undergoing investigation.

These coordinated operations reflect the Nigeria Police Force’s resolve to combat all forms of criminality through proactive measures, intelligence gathering, and community partnership. The Public Relations Officer of @policeng_osun- SP Abiodun Ojelabi, has announced the resumption of Ibrahim Gotan as the new Commissioner of Police.

This follows the retirement of Mohammed Umar Abba.
