Students say the name change could damage the university's reputation

Students in Nigeria's main city of Lagos have been involved in angry protests about the president's decision to change the name of their university.

Hundreds of them blocked a major bridge and other main roads, causing chaos.

The renaming of the University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University was made without warning on Tuesday.

Abiola, a politician who died in custody during military rule, is seen by many as a hero, but the students say they should have been consulted first.

He won elections in 1993 which were then annulled by the military and he died in prison five years later.

Let me tell you what many of you don't know.
The story they never wanted the world to hear.
The truth… behind Mr. Ibu’s déath.

Most people knew Jasmine as Mr. Ibu’s adopted daughter. But do you know how that came to be?

Jasmine’s biological father was a soldier and a very closed friend to Mr ibu. A brave one. But he dîed when Jasmine was still very small. That was when Mr. Ibu stepped in. He took her in, raised her, loved her like his own blood.

He sent her to school, trained her, and when the time came, she travelled out to Cyprus to further her studies.
Life moved on.

Then one day in 2020, Jasmine received a strange message on WhatsApp. It said,
“Please, help… Daddy needs you.”

She thought it was a scám.

But something in her heart told her to look into it.

That’s when she found out that Mr. Ibu had relocated from Abuja to Lagos… and was sûffering.
He had nothing. No support. No stable home.
He was sîck, bróke, and abândoned.

Every single day, he was begging Jasmine for money—and she kept sending.
She sent until she got tired.
Then she asked, “What exactly is going on, Daddy?”

And when she heard that he was really sîck and nobody—not even his family—was looking after him,
she booked a flight and came back to Nigeria immediately.

When she saw Mr. Ibu in person… she couldn’t believe her eyes.
He was a shadow of himself.
Thîn. Wéak. Bróken.

She took him straight to the hospital and started caring for him like her own father.

And it was there… on that hospital bed… that Mr. Ibu said something that shôok her to her bones.

In his own words, he looked at her and said:

“Jasmine… they want me dtad. That’s the truth. They don’t care about me. They just want to take my properties. They are waiting for me to dîe so they can share everything I ever worked for.”

Then he paused… looked away… and added with páin in his voice:

“Even my wife… the woman I called my own… chéated on me. Jasmine, don’t let her come here. I will never trust her again. Even if I dîe, just know this — I never found peace in this world. Not in my marriage… not in my home.”

Those were his words.
From his own mouth.
Not rumors. Not gossip.

Now the man who made the whole world laugh has dîed with tears in his heart.
Not from sîckness alone… but from héartbreak, bétrayal, and néglect.
