Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

2 Chronicles 16:1-10
In the six and thirtieth year of the reign of Asa Baasha king of Israel came up against Judah, and built Ramah, to the intent that he might let none go out or come in to Asa king of Judah.
Then Asa brought out silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the king's house, and sent to Benhadad king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus, saying,
There is a league between me and thee, as there was between my father and thy father: behold, I have sent thee silver and gold; go, break thy league with Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me.
And Ben-hadad hearkened unto king Asa, and sent the captains of his armies against the cities of Israel; and they smote Ijon, and Dan, and Abel-maim, and all the store cities of Naphtali.
And it came to pass, when Baasha heard it, that he left off building of Ramah, and let his work cease.
Then Asa the king took all Judah; and they carried away the stones of Ramah, and the timber thereof, wherewith Baasha was building; and he built therewith Geba and Mizpah.
And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said unto him, Because thou hast relied on the king of Syria, and not relied on the LORD thy God, therefore is the host of the king of Syria escaped out of thine hand.
Were not the Ethiopians and the Lubims a huge host, with very many chariots and horsemen? yet, because thou didst rely on the LORD, he delivered them into thine hand.
For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.
Then Asa was wroth with the seer, and put him in a prison house; for he was in a rage with him because of this thing. And Asa oppressed some of the people the same time.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
*Pride makes the proud blind to obvious realities.*
MESSAGE
Pride can be very subtle. It can be masqueraded in the most subtle nature: which means that it can hide in meek looking persons. Pride can wear a humble look and hide in the most humble looking individual, just to dodge prying searchlights. The easiest thing to do is to discern pride in other people but very difficult to acknowledge and identify it when you are the one exhibiting it. Most times, the percentage of error we condemn in other people is smaller compared to the alarming obvious display in our own lives.
Another subtle side of pride is a feeling of self-sufficiency.
This kind of disposition makes you feel you don't need anybody's help: irrespective of their position and level in society.
King Asa, in today's text, exhibited this trait when he felt he no longer needed to seek God's help on any issue because he felt he had reached a level of sufficiency.
Whereas, in his early days, he would rather not take any step until adequate prayer had been made and men of God had been called to get direction from God. But when he felt that he was strong enough and would no more need God's guidance, then began the beginning of his end. His confidence began to cave in while God stood by and watched since He was no more needed.
The Scriptures clearly state that genuine promotions can only come from God. He alone can truly lift up and abase anyone. He graciously lifted up but failed to maintain the humble nature qualifier.
Such an individual will equally lose the crown that goes with the throne.
The Bible did not mince words when it said: the meek shall inherit the earth.
And so when King Asa became self-sufficient and unable to seek the Lord for help like in times past, he brought himself into a direct affront with God, and none can withstand God and prosper.
Therefore, God sent a prophet to proclaim his downfall.
Proud dispositions are not limited to the rich and powerful people alone.
Some poor people can be unimaginably proud, too.
Most times at their level, it gets complicated because you don't get to find one reason why the individual is proud.
Poor, ignorant, and proud. That is a disaster: isn't it?
There are poor and ignorant men who would ignore and rather die in poverty than humble themselves to seek ways out of their predicament just because they do not like the point of contact.
They can prefer to shun books that have enough light to dispel darkness in their areas of need to their own detriment simply because it's coming from a quarter they don't seem to like. It is truly pathetic to be obviously in need of help and yet be pretending about it. Poverty is bad enough. Ignorance and pride make it disastrous.
*Pride makes the proud blind to obvious realities in life.*
The proud can't see beyond himself, and he always feels and thinks he knows and understands better than everyone. Hence, they will never learn from anyone. This is another subtle side of pride.
