Late Stella Obasanjo, the wife of the former
President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo
attended a programme close to where she
obtained her Secondary School education.
After the programme, while stepping out of the
venue, she heard somebody shouting from
behind, "Aunty Star!,
Aunty Star!, Aunty Star!..........."
This was the name her juniors in school used to
call her while she was in Secondary School.
She turned around and saw the woman calling
her and ordered her escorts to allow her pass
through. The woman informed her that she was one of her juniors while they were in school.
Her Excellency was so pleased to meet her. The
woman took the opportunity to plead with Stella to assist her as she was a widow and was
suffering with her children. Her Excellency, been a very compassionate
woman asked her to name what she wanted her to do for her. The woman replied her by saying "Anything". This question was put to her again and she repeated the same answer! So Her
Excellency instructed one of her escorts to give
the woman #50,000.
After which, she gave the woman her private
number and asked her to call her in two weeks
time, that she was about traveling out and that
by then, she should have thought out exactly
what she wants her to do for her. The woman went home rejoicing and even went to testify
in Church, However, before the 2 weeks elapsed, Stella Obasanjo died abroad while undergoing a surgery!

The Origin Of The Word ‘Ìyàwó’....Otherwise Known As "WIFE" In English

It is unknown to many speakers of the Yorùbá language that the original Yorùbá word for wife is ‘aya’ and not the commonly used ‘Ìyàwó’.

Back in the early years of the Yorùbá people, the word “ Iyawo “did not have a place in the Yorùbá language not until an incident brought about its coinage and usage. Old Nigeria present you the origin of the Yorùbá word Ìyàwó .

Origin of the Yorùbá word Ìyàwó:
Long ago in Yorùbá land, a beautiful princess and daughter of the first king of Iwó town named Wúràọlá was in the quest of getting herself a patient, tolerant and well mannered husband.
Strong and good looking men, the likes of Sàngó, Ògún and others, had already traveled to Iwó town to seek the hand of Wúràọlá in marriage but left not with a wife but uncontrollable anger. Wúràọlá had been rude to everyone of them. In fact, she hurled insults and curses at her suitors which made them all leave on the same day they arrived the town of Iwo because they couldn’t tolerate her bad behaviors.

Ọ̀rúnmìlà, a good looking man, also journeyed to Iwó in the bid to win the hand of Wúràọlá in marriage. But before he set out, he had already consulted Olódùmarè , the supreme being, through Ifá . Olódùmarè revealed to Òrúnmìlà that he must be patient with Wúràọlá and endure her behaviors no matter how bad they are in order to succeed in the quest of marrying Wúràọlá .

When Òrúnmìlà got to the palace of the king of Iwó, he was greeted with a hiss and scornful look by Wúràọlá. The unperturbed Òrúnmìlà smiled and returned her greetings with kind and sweet words and also presented gifts to the king.

Òrúnmìlà stayed in Iwó for seven days which can be described as nothing but a hell on earth. Wúràọlá didn’t serve Òrúnmìlà water let alone food. She insulted the goodness out of Òrúnmìlà but he stayed calm and smiled at her. He even smiled when she used his opon ifa (divination board) as firewood and when she took his pouch (àpò ominijekun) from him. Though, Òrúnmìlà boiled with rage, still, he didn’t show it or leave Iwo according to the instructions of Olódùmarè .
On the sixth day of Òrúnmìlà's stay in Iwó town, the king of Iwó gave Wúràọlá in marriage to him after concluding that he is a patient, kind and tolerant man suitable to marry his daughter. Meanwhile, Wúràọlá's bad behaviors were planned to test her suitors so as to get her a husband with good manners and temper. She was a lovely, caring and well behaved lady. Òrúnmìlà was glad that he heeded to the instructions of Olódùmarè and on the seventh day, he and Wúràọlá journey back to his town.

Òrúnmìlà was welcomed and praised by his townspeople for his achievement. When they asked him about Wuraola, his wife, he responded, “Ìyà tí mo jẹ ní Iwó” (my sufferings in Iwó town ) That was how wives became known as Ìyà-Iwó (sufferings in Iwó ) and now Ìyàwó . So men don't be afraid or surprise by what you experience daily, it started ages ago....!

Senate Suspends Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for Six Months

The Nigerian Senate has handed a six-month suspension to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District.

This decision was made after a majority vote, aligning with the recommendations of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct.

The Senate also voted against reconsidering the suspension until the six-month period elapses or Akpoti-Uduaghan apologizes.

As part of the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s office will be locked, and she will be barred from accessing the National Assembly’s premises.

Her salaries and those of her legislative aides will also be suspended during this period.

To appeal the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan must submit a written apology to the Senate for violating its rules.

Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro endorsed the ethics committee report, stating that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions warranted disciplinary action, likening her to “a child” who needs correction.

He said, “As Nigerians, we have a tradition; if you beat your child with the right hand, you draw that child with the left hand.”

The suspension stems from a heated confrontation in the Senate last week, where Akpoti-Uduaghan protested the reassignment of her seat by Akpabio.

She had arrived at the session to find her nameplate removed and her seat reassigned, prompting her to challenge the move and accuse the Senate leadership of marginalizing her voice and attempt to make her invisible.

Soun appoints Rev Owoade as Palace Chaplain

The Soun of Ogbomosoland Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege 111, has appointed the first ever Chaplain for the Ogbomoso Palace. He is Rev'd Samuel Oluwatosin Owoade.

This is contained in a press release signed by the monarch's Coordinating Assistant on Media and Community Relations, Rev'd Peter Olaleye.

According to the statement, made available to newsmen, Rev'd Owoade is appointed to coordinate Christian worship service in the palace.

Rev'd Olaleye further informed that Oba Olaoye made the disclosure while addressing the leadership of the Heads of Churches and Christian Association of Nigeria, recently.

"His Imperial Majesty Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye Orumogege lll has in accordance with the leading of the Holy Spirit appointed Rev Samuel Oluwatosin Owoade as the Chaplain of the Palace. His choice was reached after much consultation.

"This will help in standardizing worship experience in the palace. We now have a Palace Chief Imam, Palace Chaplain and Araba Oluawo whose sole devotions are coordinating religious programmes in the Palace based on which religious faith is involved.

"Kabiyesi believes this will bring more efficiency and effectiveness in spiritual activities in the Palace. It will also bring promptness."

The statement added that while congratulating the new chaplain, Kabiyesi urged the clergyman to live up to expectations as stated in his appointment letter.

Rev'd Owoade until his call to serve in the palace was Minister-in-Charge of New Covenant Baptist Church, Aduin, Ogbomoso.

He attended primary and secondary schools in Ondo and Ogbomoso eventually passing out of Baptist Secondary Grammar School, Ahoyaya, Ogbomoso.
