  • Immigration Officer at Checkpoint Blamed for Motorcycle Accident in Badagry, Victim’s Leg Broken

A tragic accident involving a motorcyclist has been linked to the actions of a Nigerian Immigration officer at a checkpoint in Ashipa, Badagry West, leaving the rider with a broken leg.

According CityMood Badagry, the incident happened around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, when Ashamu Liamidi Badaru was riding his motorcycle behind two vehicles near the immigration checkpoint. According to Basit Senapon Badaru, a relative of the victim, an immigration officer allegedly hit a moving vehicle with a stick, apparently because the driver failed to stop as instructed. The sudden strike caused the vehicle to stop abruptly, forcing the car behind it to brake sharply. Unfortunately, the motorcyclist riding behind them couldn't stop in time and crashed into the vehicle.

“He broke his leg immediately and was left lying on the road with no help from the officers at first,” Basit said.

Passersby who witnessed the scene reportedly pleaded with the immigration officers to help the injured man. Eventually, he was taken to Harmony Hospital. The officer-in-charge at the checkpoint, Mr. Folmi Ayuba, was said to have accompanied him. Later, the victim was transferred to Badagry for further examination, including an X-ray to assess the severity of the injury and determine further treatment.

The incident has been reported to the Ashipa Police Division, but as of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Immigration Service has yet to release an official statement.

  • A JUDGEMENT IGNORED: WHY LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTONOMY REMAINS A MIRAGE

    By Ihom Abraham Terhemen

In July 2024, the Supreme Court of Nigeria delivered a historic judgement mandating the direct allocation of funds from the Federation Account to local government councils, effectively ending the illegal control of local government finances by state governments. The verdict was widely hailed as a triumph for democracy and a turning point for grassroots development. Yet, one year after this landmark ruling, full implementation remains elusive.

Despite the clarity and authority of the judgement, many state governments have continued to operate as though nothing has changed. Funds meant for local councils are still being diverted or subjected to bureaucratic bottlenecks through state-controlled structures. Elected local government officials remain weak and largely voiceless, while in some states, caretaker committees continue to be imposed in direct violation of constitutional provisions and past judicial pronouncements.

The reluctance to implement the Supreme Court's directive exposes a deeper institutional resistance to democratic reform at the subnational level. Governors, who benefit politically and financially from the status quo, have shown little enthusiasm in surrendering their grip over the third tier of government. This defiance not only undermines the authority of the judiciary but also erodes public confidence in Nigeria’s federal structure.

It is therefore imperative that the Federal Government, through the Office of the Attorney General and relevant oversight bodies, ensure strict enforcement of the Supreme Court judgement. Civil society, the media, and community leaders must also amplify their voices to demand compliance. The National Assembly should consider constitutional amendments with enforceable sanctions for violations relating to local government autonomy.

If Nigeria is to witness meaningful rural development and democratic deepening, local governments must be allowed to function independently, free from state manipulation. The Supreme Court has spoken. Now, it is time for action. Ignoring this judgement is not just contempt of court—it is betrayal of the Nigerian people.

  • The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has revealed how he turned down an offer of a multimillion-naira house, requesting that the funds be used for the public good.

In a statement on Sunday marking his 64th birthday, Obi said he turned down the N120 million house gift during his 50th birthday when he was governor of Anambra state.

While lamenting the scale of suffering and deprivation confronting Nigerians, he called for the redirection of resources to support the country’s health and educational institutions.

Obi noted that while he does not personally celebrate birthdays, he prefers that resources meant for him be redirected to projects that benefit the public.

“I recall vividly when I turned 50 during my time as governor. One institution offered to build me a house in the village. When I asked for the cost, they said ₦120 million. I requested that the funds be used instead to build classrooms in three institutions across Agulu, Ekwulobia and Abatete. They obliged—and the impact was far-reaching.

  • WE ARE VALUED AND WANTED EVERYWHERE GLOBALLY BUT WE CHOSE TO STAY IN NIGERIA - Dr. Pastor Paul Enenche

While teaching on the importance of Praying for one's Nation as a prayer amplifier, Dr. Paul Enenche spoke on the patriotism of Americans and advised Nigerians to love their nation no matter what. He went on to say that he believes in the destiny and plan of God for Nigeria that's why they chose to stay back in the country despite the demand by other nations.

In his words, "Nobody can genuinely prosper in alnad they hate. That's what our Nigerians do to themselves. We were in America on their independence day, we had a program, a few weeks ago. Come with their flags, you need to see the patriotism. You need to see the love, big (flags), all manner. Somebody dropped the flag on the ground, a woman said, 'that flag is on the ground, pick it up'. Their flag is not permitted to lie down, stand it up. 'God bless America' is a standard song, that is sung everywhere. 'In God We Trust' is on their currency, how will that not be the reference currency of the world? Anywhere you go, you can spend dollar. Can you spend Naira everywhere? Or any other currency for that matter. Anywhere you go. And the people, the citizens, the indigenes are prospering in their land so tey everybody wants to run there and live there and declare themselves captives, refugee, asylum. Come with flags, they came with big ones. So, you prosper".

Speaking further, he said, "Now, for as long as God has given you this Nation as your Nation, you have no other choice but to love it. That is why we're still here. There is opportunity to go. Somebody said, 'if they don't want you in Nigeria, come to America'. Everywhere, I say, 'they want us here. We want ourselves here'. We are valued everywhere globally including Pakistan. Everywhere globally - the high, the low, the middle - but we chose to be here because we know there's destiny here. We know there's a purpose and a plan of God here and we know the agenda of God here must come to pass".
