Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has revealed why he did not choose the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as his running mate, saying Wike was not dropped because of betrayal but because he was rejected by key party stakeholders for his divisive style.

  • Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has hinted at taking another shot at the Presidency.

Atiku, who ran against ex-President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, and challenged President Bola Tinubu in 2023, gave the indication when he received a delegation led by former Minister Idris Abdullahi.

He had said stealing and any form of corrupt practice will have no place in the government he leads.

In a video he shared on his X handle, Atiku said “enough is enough”.
He said, “We will decisively deal with anyone who says he will steal or engage in any corrupt practice. We will fight him, I swear. Enough is enough! Every nation is progressing but Nigeria’s growth is hindered by a few elements.”

“That was why we ensured that our interim leadership structure is a composition of people with proven integrity and honesty. And it is from this that you can tell what will be the style of our leadership.”

In a post accompanying the video, Atiku stressed that Nigerians cannot continue to suffer because of bad governance.

“Nigerians cannot continue to suffer amidst an abundance of resources owing to bad governance,” stressing that the coalition of opposition leaders under the umbrella of African Democratic Congress (ADC) would work hard to transform the lives of Nigerians.

Daily Trust had reported how Atiku and some opposition politicians had unveiled ADC as the platform to use in unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

There have been different talks about the presidential ticket of the coalition.

Supporters of the newly appointed National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, on Friday evening thronged the Lagos airport to welcome him back from Abuja.

The former Minister of Interior was spotted among a cheering crowd of loyalists, many of whom wore bright orange caps as a symbol of solidarity and renewed political fervour.

PUNCH Online reports that Aregbesola was recently named interim National Secretary of the ADC, a new coalition party aiming to reshape Nigeria’s political scene ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on his new role, Aregbesola drew inspiration from South Africa’s African National Congress, describing it as a party with vision and integrity — qualities he says are lacking in most Nigerian parties.

“The ADC is not perfect, but it stands for something. It was forged in resistance, sharpened by vision, and led by men and women who believe in justice, dignity, equality, inclusivity of all interests, and true freedom. It has character. It has soul,” he said.

“Sadly, in Nigeria today, we cannot say the same about many of our political parties. Our political landscape is plagued by parties that lack ideological depth. They are empty shells emerging and splitting, not over policy or principle, but over power and personality,” he added.

The ADC, backed by big political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and ex-Senate President David Mark, is being positioned as a strong opposition force to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

  • Coalition Plotting to Hand Atiku 2027 Ticket – Kachikwu

Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2023 elections, Dumebi Kachikwu, has alleged that the newly formed opposition coalition is a calculated scheme designed to produce former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Kachikwu made the remarks during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

According to him, a faction of the ADC, now led by former Senate President David Mark, has hijacked the party to serve a northern political agenda.

He said the coalition, under the guise of rescuing Nigeria, was a vehicle for Atiku’s bid for the presidency.

The coalition was engineered and designed to produce Atiku Abubakar as the standard flag bearer,” Kachikwu said. “If not, I challenge them to make a statement that the ADC 2027 presidential ticket is for Southerners.”
