  • NDLEA seizes cannabis and cocaine concealed in microwaves and lipsticks at Lagos airport.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted significant consignments of drugs concealed in unusual ways.

According to Femi Babafemi, NDLEA spokesperson, “loud” cannabis hidden inside microwaves imported from Thailand and cocaine embedded in ladies’ lipsticks destined for Guinea were seized.

At Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, NDLEA officers recovered 23 parcels of “loud” cannabis weighing 11.3 kg concealed within new microwaves on an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Bangkok via Addis Ababa.

Ezenwegbu Chike, a suspect, was arrested in connection with the seizure on July 7.

This follows a recent seizure of 420 grams of cocaine hidden in 84 female lipsticks bound for the UK.

On July 11, @ndlea_nigeria operatives intercepted another shipment of cocaine concealed in lipsticks among cargo containing hair attachments and cosmetics heading to Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

About 400 grams of cocaine mixed with phenacetin, a cutting agent, were recovered.

  • By the constitution, I had to inaugurate or prorogue the National Assembly on June 4 1999. The most important officer in the National Assembly is the Senate President and that office had been zoned to the South East. And here was where Atiku Abubakar, my Vice President, first showed his hand and his character.

Without seeking my view or approval, he started planning the installation of Chuba Okadigbo as the Senate President. I did a background check on Chuba including his past as a student and made enquiries about hin in the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) under Shagari and no one would recommend him for the post of Senate President.

I left Atiku to go on his chase while I carried out a meticulous and detailed investigation and background check on each Senator from the South East. The one that appeared most appointable was Evan Enwerem.

I canvassed the Senate across the board for his election and he was elected. Atiku did not expect it and he felt sore. He bagan to strategise for Enwerem to be removed and Chuba Okadigbo to be installed.

His strategy worked because I was at Abuja airport to receive a visiting Head of State when news reached me that the Senate had mpeached Enwerem and elected Okadigbo.

I was not perturbed. I came to understand from some Senators including Florence Ita Giwa, who later became my Special Adviser/Liaison Officer to the National Assembly, that Atiku distributed US$5,000 each to some Senators to carry out the "coup".

That was the beginning of bribing the legislature to carry out a particular line of action to suit or satisfy the purpose or desire of an individual or group. The National Assembly had tasted blood and they would continue to want more.

From the day I nominated Atiku to be my Vice; he set his mind not for any good, benefit or service of the country, but on furiously planning to upstage, supplant or remove me at all costs and to take my place. That was what I brought him for, but he was impatient and over ambitious. He was not ready to learn and to wait. Pity!

His marabout, who predicted that despite being elected as Governor, he would not be sworn in as a Governor, which happened, also assured him that he would take over from me in a matter of months rather than years.

All his plans, appointments of people and his actions were towards actualusation of his marabout's prediction. Once, I realised his intention and programme, I watched him like a hawk without giving any indication of what I knew and letting down my guard.

I could not succumb to the distraction, diversion and malevolence of an ambitious but unwise deputy.

  • Unpaid Allowances Concerns Revealed As Super Falcons’ Continue WAFCON Campaign

The Super Falcons have qualified for their final group match at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with maximum points, but once again, unpaid bonuses and allowances have raised concerns and affected preparations.

Despite their strong performance on the pitch, reports show that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is yet to settle outstanding payments owed to the players. These include match bonuses, training camp allowances, and other entitlements dating as far back as 2021.

During a press session in Casablanca on Saturday, journalist Osasu Obayiuwana asked NFF President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, if the players were receiving their payments during the tournament. Gusau replied:

“We are in talks with the federal government of Nigeria. I’m confident that all money due to the players will be released soon. For now, we are giving daily allowances while we wait for funds. I can assure you that all payments will be made before the end of the tournament.”

However, when asked if debts from earlier years had been cleared, Gusau said only a small amount remained unpaid and denied that the issue went back to 2021.

But documents obtained by Obayiuwana from sources close to the team reveal a different story. The breakdown shows that each player is owed over $13,600 and ₦10,000, covering various tournaments from 2021 to 2023.

    “Same Promises Every Time”

When asked if the NFF’s promise to settle all WAFCON payments before the tournament ends could be trusted, Super Falcons midfielder Jennifer Echegini remained calm, saying the team was focused on winning, not the money.

Still, fans and analysts recall how the Falcons boycotted training ahead of the third-place match against Zambia in the 2022 WAFCON, also held in Morocco, due to similar unpaid entitlements

The Super Falcons will play Algeria tonight in Casablanca in a top-of-the-table clash in Group B, hoping to keep their winning momentum despite the growing financial concerns behind the scenes.
Wish the super falcons luck today.
