  • Smoked Fish: A Nigerian Treasure or a Silent Danger?

    Smoked fish is a beloved part of our Nigerian culture — from our stews to soups and even snacks, the unique flavor it brings is unmatched. It is cherished not just for taste, but for preservation. But here's the big question: Can smoked fish be harmful to our health?

    The Good Side of Smoked Fish

    Preservation Power: Smoking helps preserve fish for longer without refrigeration, especially in rural and coastal communities.

    Flavor Booster: It adds that deep, smoky taste that elevates traditional dishes like soups, jollof, and stew.

    Protein Rich: Smoked fish remains a good source of essential proteins, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins (like B12), and minerals like iron and zinc.

    But while the benefits are notable, we must also talk about what’s hiding in the smoke.

    The Hidden Health Risks of Smoked Fish

    1. Cancer-Causing Compounds (PAHs & Nitrosamines)

    When fish is smoked — especially with open flames and over long periods — it can absorb polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitrosamines, which are chemical compounds linked to cancer. These can settle on the skin and inside the flesh of the fish.

    > The darker or blackened parts of smoked fish are often the most contaminated.

    2. Poor Hygiene During Smoking

    If smoked in unsanitary environments, fish may be exposed to:

    Flies and bacteria during drying.

    Dust, smoke soot, and fecal particles from the smoking area.

    Contaminated water or surfaces.

    This puts people at risk of foodborne illnesses, diarrhea, typhoid, and parasites.

    3. Too Much Salt

    Some smoked fish are heavily salted before smoking, leading to:

    High blood pressure.

    Kidney stress.

    Water retention and bloating.

    So What Should We Do?

    We don't need to throw away smoked fish, but we must become smart eaters and safe processors.

    Safe Tips for Eating Smoked Fish:

    Buy from clean, trusted sources.

    Avoid over-blackened fish with too much char.

    Soak or rinse before use to reduce salt and surface smoke.

    Limit how often you eat it – moderation is key.

    Consider oven-smoking or grilling at home with cleaner fuel like coconut husks instead of firewood alone.

    Final Thought

    Smoked fish is a part of us, but so is our health. Let’s honor our traditions while improving our practices. Let food be your medicine, not your silent poison.

    Psalm 91 is a beautiful and powerful passage! Here it is:

    "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
    I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.’

    He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.
    You will not fear the terror of night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
    nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.

    A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
    You will only observe with your eyes
    and see the punishment of the wicked.

    If you say, ‘The Lord is my refuge,’
    and you make the Most High your dwelling,
    no harm will overtake you,
    no disaster will come near your tent.
    For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;
    they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

    You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
    ‘Because he loves me,’ says the Lord, ‘I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
    He will call on me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.
    With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.'"

    May the promises and truths in Psalm 91 bring you comfort, peace, and assurance of God's protection and love!

When I saw him running, passing, and feinting, I said to myself, is this man really 38?! his features are as if he is still 25! Most importantly, his movement, his intelligence, his vision, as if time does not affect him! At one point, we were 3 or 4 players running after him just to try to stop him! Imagine this scene, a man of his age makes an entire defense tremble! This is not normal, this is an extraordinary talent! But you know what? This proves one thing: true talent never ages. Messi is not just a player, he is art walking on the grass. The greatest honor was to have shared the field with him, even if it made me feel like I had to train for another 10 years just to be at his level! But believe me, if every player was like Messi, football would be a game from another planet"

  • DUNAMIS SEEDS OF DESTINY A DAILY DEVOTIONAL BY DR. PASTOR PAUL ENENCHE.

    DATE: THURSDAY, 3RD. JULY, 2025.

    TOPIC: IMPACT DESPITE SETBACK.

    SCRIPTURE: The king of Aram had great admiration for Naaman, the commander of his army, because through him the LORD had given Aram great victories. But though Naaman was a mighty warrior, he suffered from leprosy. 2 KINGS 5:1 (NLT).

    THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: To wait until you have no challenge at all before making impact is to live and die useless.

    Our anchor scripture makes it abundantly clear that it is possible to live an impactful life despite setbacks. It is possible to have outstanding results in life and command the attention of your generation despite setbacks in personal life.

    Challenges are parts of life to varying degrees. Everyone has one little challenge or the other, in one area or the other, and at one point or the other in life. At every point in time, you are either celebrating victory or confronting a challenge. And to celebrate victory means you just came out of a challenge. It means you just overcame an obstacle. The only person who is without a battle, a challenge, or a problem is the one in the graveyard. To wait until you have no challenge at all before making impact is to live and die useless.

    Ecclesiastes 11:4 says, Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest (NLT).

    If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done. If you are waiting until every condition around your life is perfect, you will never get anything done.

    Beloved, note that the excuse not to do something will always be available. Naaman had great qualifications, even though he was a leper. He proved that one could make impact despite setbacks.

    First, the Bible said that he was a captain of the host. That is, he was the chief of staff of the Syrian Army. In other words, Syrian army could not go into battle until Naaman had given the command.

    Second, the Bible said that he was a great man with his master.

    Third, he was an honorable man.

    Fourth, by him God gave Syrians deliverance.

    Fifth, he was a mighty man of valour; he was a first-class soldier. He was a military strategist. He was a war lord par excellence. All these qualifications and achievements came ahead of and overshadowed his identity as a leper. He did not allow leprosy to frustrate his destiny.

    Meanwhile, in Naaman’s day, there were people with two hands, two feet, strait nose, clean skin that could have been the Chief of Army Staff but none of them had the capacity, audacity, ferocity, brutality, strategy, and stamina of Naaman. So even though he was a leper, he commanded non-leprous people. He had more impact than non-lepers. He was a leper, but he affected his generation positively.

    Beloved, never permit any setback of your life to render you irrelevant. Never allow any condition to make you useless. Never allow any setback to set you at the back.

    And I don’t care what setback you may be dealing with in your life now, if you can make up your mind that no adversity shall stop your destiny, you will command the attention of your generation.

    Remember this: To wait until you have no challenge at all before making impact is to live and die useless.

    ASSIGNMENT(S):
    1. Stop looking at your ‘limitation’; start taking advantage of what you have and maximize every opportunity that comes your way.

    2. Refuse to exit this world without making a mark.

    PRAYER: Lord, thank You for Your investment in my life. I receive the grace to manifest every deposit of your grace in my life. No setback will stop me from making impact, and no adversity shall stop my destiny, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

    DAILY BIBLE READING: Proverb 16-18

    QUOTE: Never hold anyone responsible for your success or failure in life. If you want to reach your destiny, be responsible. Culled from the book, Road Marks to Destiny by Dr Paul Enenche.
