  • Ex Chelsea Star: “Playing For England Is More Attractive Than Playing For Nigeria”

Former Chelsea attacker Eni Aluko has attributed the trend of Nigerian players with dual nationalities opting for other countries to the lack of appeal of Nigerian football.

The country has lost a lot of sportsmen and women to European and North American countries over the years.

Established world stars like Bukayo Saka, Jamal Misiala, Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze, Vicky Lopez, are just some of the players who have been lost to European countries due to their dual nationalities.

In fact if the players who have snubbed the country are assembled, they can easily form a starting eleven for the Super Eagles.

Former Chelsea attacker Aluko, is one of the players who snubbed the Super Falcons to play for another country - England.

The former Three Lionesses star was born in Nigeria to Nigerian parents, but moved to England before she turned a year. She made her debut for England's senior team at the age of 17 and went on to earn 104 senior caps.

She was a guest on Obi Mikel's Obi One Podcast, and she spoke about why she feels players with dual nationalities often choose the other countries.

Aluko noted that most of those players hardly have a connection with Nigeria, especially since they were brought up in those countries. Also, the Nigerian national teams aren't as attractive as the top European countries.

I think England is England, I think the players that grew up here (England) and choose to play for their country of heritage, it's usually because they feel like they can't, they won't make it a career for England, right. So it's almost a default decision, which it shouldn't be,” Aluko said.

“The onus is on the country to make it a very attractive option. And we know that there's some issues there that still need to be sorted out in terms of the organization, in terms of the investment, in terms of just the professionalism, right?

  • Steve Nicol on Hato to Chelsea:

🗣 "I'm trying to figure out from the player's point of view. The fact that he's played a lot of games is great, but to go and play a lot of games and then all of a sudden make a move and then you don't play, that's not easy for a 19-year-old."

  • Chelsea want BOTH Xavi Simons and Alejandro Garnacho. They're two separate topics and it's not either one or the other, BOTH are wanted.

  • The winter transfer window of 2023 was a whirlwind. Mykhailo Mudryk, the 22-year-old Ukrainian winger, was the hottest prospect in Europe. His blistering pace, deft dribbling, and flair at Shakhtar had scouts buzzing.

Arsenal, under Mikel Arteta, had been tracking him for months, their project clear: a young, hungry squad being molded into title contenders. Their vision was meticulous, their style of play dynamic, built around players like Martin Ødegaard and Bukayo Saka, who could complement Mudryk’s explosiveness. Arteta himself had called, outlining a role where Mudryk would be a cornerstone of their attack.

Then came Chelsea. Fresh off a spending spree under new ownership, they swooped in with a £88.5 million bid, outmuscling Arsenal’s offer. Their pitch was different: immediate stardom, a hefty wage packet, and the allure of a club with a storied history.

Mudryk, swayed by the glamour and the promise of quick success, signed for Chelsea. Arsenal, unable to match the financial muscle, moved on, signing Leandro Trossard instead. The choice felt right at the time, but Mudryk will always look back and regret choosing Chelsea over Arsenal
