  • We’ve Had Fulani, Hausa, Yoruba Presidents, But We’ve Yet To Have a True Nigerian President–Obasanjo | ABK News

On Friday, July 18, 2025, The Nation reported that former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo strongly criticised the current state of Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, describing the country as being in “bondage.” Speaking at his Abeokuta residence during a visit from southern leaders of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Obasanjo expressed grave concern over widespread insecurity, economic instability, and divisive ethnic politics, which he said were severely hindering national progress.

Obasanjo lamented that Nigeria is trapped in a cycle of poor leadership that has subjected its citizens to continued hardship without any real hope for transformative change. He said the current condition of the country is alarming and demands not only attention but also national prayer and vigilance. Despite the dire situation, he urged Nigerians to remain politically active, hopeful, and committed to national affairs.

He stressed the urgent need for decisive action to combat insecurity and revamp the struggling economy. Additionally, Obasanjo warned against the persistence of tribal politics, which he believes continues to fragment the nation and obstruct meaningful development. According to him, many political leaders are more concerned with personal gain than with genuine service to the country.

Obasanjo also stated that Nigeria has disappointed not only its citizens but the global community as well. He called for a shift from ethnically driven leadership to a truly nationalistic approach. “We have had Fulani Nigerian presidents, Hausa Nigerian presidents, Yoruba Nigerian presidents,” he remarked, “but we have not yet had a true Nigerian president who represents all.” Until Nigeria breaks free from ethnically based politics and embraces inclusive leadership, Obasanjo warned, it will remain mired in the same set of challenges.

He concluded by urging for unity, sincerity, and a deep commitment to the national interest above regional or personal agendas.
