Being overly friendly will usually attract disrespect. Instead of being too friendly, learn to be polite. Walk into a room, and acknowledge people you do not know with a nod, a wave, or a smile. If the situation demands it (which is rare), give a verbal greeting. And then mind your business thereafter. If they value you, they will come to you. If they are people of honour whom you are familiar with, you may go to them. But in the absence of that, just retain, maintain and sustain your self-respect by enjoying your own company.
