    * On this day in 2006, a pipeline explosion in the fishing village of Inagbe Beach, near Lagos, Nigeria, killed over 250 people and displaced 276,000 people. The blast occurred when a truck rammed into a gas processing plant near a vandalized petroleum gas pipeline.

    * On this day in 2008, a massive earthquake rocked China. The magnitude 7.9 quake left some 69,000 people dead, 18,000 missing, and 4.8 million homeless. It was the deadliest earthquake in China since 1976 when the Tangshan earthquake killed over 240,000 people.
