• Jeff Bezos’ Bezos Earth Fund gave a $100 million grant to support MethaneSAT, a satellite designed to track methane emissions. But the $88 million satellite has now gone missing after it lost power over Norway on June 20, 2025.

MethaneSAT was launched in March 2024 to monitor oil and gas emissions. Scientists say methane is responsible for about one-third of human-caused global temperature rises.

Although the satellite is “likely not recoverable,” the Environmental Defense Fund called the mission a success. Before losing contact, MethaneSAT revealed methane emissions in some areas were 10 times higher than previously reported.
