GOVERNOR ALIA VISITS SENATOR SUEMO CHIA – CELEBRATING A LIVING LEGEND

The Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, Tuesday, July 29, 2025 paid a heartfelt visit to Senator Suemo Chia at his Old GRA residence in Makurdi. This visit was dedicated to honoring and celebrating the invaluable contributions of this remarkable leader to the Tiv people and Nigeria at large.

Governor Alia praised Senator Chia for his countless legacies and assured him of the unwavering support of the Benue State Government. He emphasized that his administration remains open to meaningful ideas from the Benue citizenry, particularly from esteemed figures like him.

In response, Senator Chia expressed his gratitude to Governor Alia for taking the time to honor him while he is still alive—something many have neglected to do. He offered his advice and blessings to the Governor, wishing him success in all his endeavors.

Senator Suemo Chia, born over 82 years ago in the rural community of Mbajima in Tongov District, has dedicated his life to the service of his people. His impressive educational background, including degrees from Ahmadu Bello University and the Nigerian Law School, underscores his commitment to personal and community development.

- 1954-1955: Babel School, Tse-Adoor
- 1956-1960: Sudan United Mission Primary School, Zaki-Biam
- 1961-1965: Benue Provincial Secondary School, Katsina-Ala
- 1966-1967: Boys Secondary School (HSC), Gindiri, Plateau State
- 1968-1971: Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (LL.B)
- 1971-1972: Nigerian Law School, Lagos (B.L)

Work Experience Includes:
- Various roles in education, legal practice, and public service
- Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Information in Benue State
- Senator of the National Assembly from 1979 to 1983
- Author of "Adan - Wade Kohol Ga," a classic that captures the essence of Tiv history, akin to Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart"

Senator Suemo Chia’s legacy continues through his leadership in the Nigerian Red Cross Society, his influence within the National Party of Nigeria, and his significant contributions to youth development throughout the state.

Governor Alia’s visit highlights the importance of recognizing and celebrating the contributions of distinguished individuals like Senator Chia, advocating for continued acknowledgment of his legacy by the Benue State Government and all progressive organizations.
