Speaking to NBC News, US President Donald Trump warned that he will impose secondary tariffs of 25% to 50% on all Russian oil if both countries cannot reach a deal to end the war in Ukraine, and "if I think it was Russia’s fault," Trump said.
“That would be, that if you buy oil from Russia, you can’t do business in the United States,” he explained.
Trump stated that these tariffs could take effect within a month if no ceasefire is reached.
He also expressed anger over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s leadership, NBC News reported, and revealed plans to speak with Putin this week.
Meanwhile, Putin has proposed placing Ukraine under temporary administration to facilitate new elections and the signing of major agreements, potentially sidelining Zelensky.
Despite his frustrations, Trump claimed to maintain a "very good relationship" with Putin, suggesting his anger would subside if Putin "does the right thing".
