Chairman of Dawakin Tofa Local Government, Anas Muktar Bello, a Fulani by ethnicity, has reportedly led the demolition of Hausa residents' homes and sprayed herbicides on their farmlands. Many residents were forcefully evicted as he claimed the land originally belongs to the Fulani, describing it as their ancestral grazing area. This act is widely seen as part of a larger plan to reclaim land for his Fulani kinsmen at the expense of the indigenous Hausa farmers.

Kano State is home to a population that is about 90% Hausa, yet political power has remained largely in the hands of the Fulani since the 1804 coup led by Usman Ɗan Fodio.
