Super Falcons Set for Trophy Parade and Presidential Reception on Monday

Nigeria’s Super Falcons are expected back in the country on Monday, following their historic triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The team will be treated to a hero’s welcome, with a trophy parade scheduled to hold in Abuja. The parade will feature an open-roof bus procession along major routes in the capital city, starting from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport through Airport Road, Berger Junction, Maitama and Wuse Market areas, all the way to the Presidential Villa.

At the Villa, the Super Falcons will be formally hosted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in recognition of their outstanding performance on the continent.

The Super Falcons defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat to clinch their 10th WAFCON title — the most by any team in Africa. The Nigerian team fought back from two goals down to win the title in dramatic fashion, once again proving their status as queens of African football.

President Tinubu was among the first to congratulate the team shortly after the final whistle, praising their resilience, courage, and team spirit.

“They chose to accept this mission. They understood the assignment,” the President wrote on his official social media page.
“Our Superior Super Falcons delivered in true Nigerian fashion — Never say Never.
They went. They saw. They conquered again. 10-time champions of Africa. #MissionX: COMPLETE!”

The homecoming celebration on Monday is expected to draw football fans, dignitaries, and government officials in honour of the team’s remarkable achievement.

Yasuke, an African man who arrived in Japan in 1579, is recognized as the first Black samurai. He was brought to Japan as a slave by Portuguese traders. However, he gained the favor of Oda Nobunaga, a powerful feudal lord, who granted him a residence, stipend, and a katana (sword). This elevated him from captivity to a respected warrior. Some historians dispute whether he was a true samurai, but his status as a retainer and bodyguard to Nobunaga is well-documented.
