The Notorious B.I.G.’s Estate Sells Major Share of Catalogue to Primary Wave

The estate of The Notorious B.I.G. has finalized a deal with music publishing powerhouse Primary Wave, selling a significant share of the late rapper’s catalogue, name, and likeness. The agreement, reportedly arranged by Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace, before her passing in February, grants Primary Wave control over a portion of the legendary rapper’s musical legacy.

A Deal Worth Millions

While the exact financial terms remain undisclosed, industry sources estimate that Biggie’s publishing and master rights could be worth up to $150 million (€138.4 million). The Hollywood Reporter previously suggested his publishing rights alone could command a price tag of $100 million (€92.3 million), with an additional $50 million (€46.1 million) for his master recordings. Sources indicate that 50% of both these rights have now been transferred to Primary Wave, giving the company a controlling share over how his music is used in films, TV shows, and branding opportunities.

Biggie’s Lasting Influence

Christopher Wallace, better known as The Notorious B.I.G., was a defining figure in East Coast hip-hop, rising to prominence with his 1994 debut album Ready to Die. His second album, Life After Death, was released posthumously following his tragic murder in 1997 at just 24 years old. Under his mother’s management, the estate has since released two additional posthumous albums and even a biographical film, Notorious.

The Rise of Music Catalogue Sales

Biggie’s estate follows a growing trend of artists and their representatives selling catalogue rights for staggering sums. In recent years, several major artists have entered similar agreements:

  • Deadmau5 sold his catalogue to Create Music Group for $55 million (€50.8 million).

  • Queen sold their catalogue to Sony Music for an unprecedented $1.27 billion (€1.17 billion) in 2024.

  • Bruce Springsteen signed a $500 million (€465 million) deal with Sony in 2021.

  • Bob Dylan sold his back catalogue to Sony for €220 million in 2022.

  • Michael Jackson's estate sold a 50% interest in his catalogue for approximately $600 million (€558 million).

These sales highlight the increasing demand for legacy music catalogues as companies seek to capitalize on streaming, licensing, and merchandising opportunities.

What’s Next for Biggie’s Legacy?

With Primary Wave now holding a substantial stake in Biggie’s catalogue, fans can expect to see his music featured more prominently across media and marketing campaigns. The deal ensures that his influence will continue to shape the entertainment industry for years to come, reinforcing his status as one of hip-hop’s greatest icons.
