  • More Reasons Emerge For Ganduje’s Resignation As APC National Chairman

Abdullahi Ganduje on Friday resigned as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and insiders say it’s because of plans to bring his political rival, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, into the party.

Sources at the APC national secretariat confirmed that Ganduje stepped down around 4.15pm on Friday, despite appeals from top party leaders. His resignation comes amid growing talks of a deal between President Bola Tinubu and Kwankwaso, a former Kano governor, to merge political forces ahead of the 2027 elections.

Though Ganduje officially blamed health reasons for leaving the position, many believe the real reason is his refusal to work under the same party structure as Kwankwaso.

“This was not unexpected,” said a party official. “We tried to convince him, but he made it clear he wouldn’t stay in the same party with Kwankwaso.”

The two Kano politicians were once allies, with Ganduje serving as Kwankwaso’s deputy from 2011 to 2015 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). But after Ganduje succeeded him as governor under the APC in 2015, their relationship broke down, turning into one of Nigeria’s most bitter political rivalries.

Ganduje’s controversial removal of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi in 2020 was widely seen as a personal move against Kwankwaso, who had installed Sanusi in 2014. The tables turned in May 2024 when NNPP Governor Abba Yusuf reinstated Sanusi — a major win for Kwankwaso’s camp and a blow to Ganduje.

Reports suggest a recent high-level meeting led to a decision to remove Ganduje and possibly Vice President Kashim Shettima, as part of a broader political shake-up to accommodate Kwankwaso.

On social media, reactions poured in. Ganduje’s ally, Salihu Yakasai, expressed anger with a post reading, “TINUBU WHY, APC WHY” followed by crying emojis. Former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, also confirmed the resignation had taken effect.

In line with the APC’s constitution, Deputy Chairman (North) Ali Dalori is expected to take over as acting National Chairman pending a new appointment.

As at Friday evening, the APC secretariat in Abuja was filled with party members and supporters, waiting for official statements while discussing the political drama unfolding at the top.
