THREE TYPES OF CARDINALS IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH 1. Cardinal Bishops They hold the highest rank among the cardinals. Typically come from suburbicarian dioceses around Rome or are directly appointed by the Pope as cardinal bishops. They often play important roles in the universal Church. 2. Cardinal Priests Usually bishops of major dioceses around the world. Assigned to titular churches in Rome, but actually lead dioceses outside of Italy. They are the most numerous among the three types of cardinals. 3. Cardinal Deacons Generally serve in the Roman Curia (the central government of the Catholic Church). Assigned to deaconries in Rome.
