• Abba Kyari in Trouble as Court issues Fresh Order on Cocaine Case
Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, and his co-defendants must open their defence in the ongoing drug trafficking case filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The ruling, delivered on Friday, April 11, followed a series of no-case submissions filed by the defendants, which the court dismissed. Justice Nwite held that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to establish a prima facie case against the embattled officer and his co-accused.

Kyari, a former Head of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), was arrested on February 14, 2022, after the NDLEA declared him wanted over alleged involvement with an international drug cartel.

He is standing trial alongside four other police officers—ACP Sunday J. Ubua, ASP Bawa James, Inspector Simon Agirgba, and Inspector John Nuhu—on charges of conspiracy to deal in 17.55kg of cocaine, unlawful dealing, and tampering with evidence.

The defendants were arraigned on March 7, 2022, alongside two suspected drug traffickers, Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne, who were apprehended at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu. While Kyari and the four officers pleaded not guilty, Umeibe and Ezenwanne pleaded guilty and were subsequently convicted.

Following the closure of the NDLEA’s case, the defence team filed a no-case submission, arguing that the evidence presented was insufficient for conviction. However, in five separate rulings, Justice Nwite disagreed.

“Assuming without conceding that the defendants were charged with a quantity of cocaine either less or more than 17.55kg, it does not negate the fact that prima facie evidence exists showing the 1st defendant dealt with or tampered with cocaine,” the judge stated in his ruling on Kyari’s application.

The court has adjourned the matter to May 21, 2025, for the defendants to open their defence

  • How killer herdsmen spread to Niger Delta, hijacked Edo forests

“We do not know if the invasion is part of their plan to subjugate other towns and claim ownership after some decades, as they have done with so many communities in the Middle Belt.

“We call on our governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to take decisive action against the killer-herdsmen and kidnappers, who have occupied our forests and use them as a base to take people hostage. He (the governor) ordered vigilantes to surrender all the weapons in their custody, which they complied with.
“They (killer herdsmen and kidnappers) make more money than those who sell cows, which explains why they leave the northern part of the country to hole up in our forests.

“As the southwest governors did with the Amotekun, our governor should contact the other south-south governors and let them set up a joint security network, comprising the army, police officers, our vigilantes, and hunters, to enter the forests in the state, destroy the camps, and evict the killer-herdsmen and kidnappers.

“Some people have suggested that the government establish forest guards; it is necessary because, as farmers, we do not go to farm anymore because of the herders. The anti-open grazing laws set up by the state governments in the South-South are ineffective as herdsmen breach them with impunity.

“Policemen even tell you that it is not their duty to go into the bush to look for herdsmen, saying we should tell our vigilantes to go there,” he added.

Normalcy returning to Uromi amid fresh kidnapping
However, normalcy is gradually returning to Uromi after the March 27 burning to death of 16 Hausa people, but the people say kidnappers were still on the rampage.

One resident said the official statement by the Ojuromi of Uromi last Friday also helped to calm nerves.

The Trump administration has officially ended temporary deportation protections for thousands of Afghans and Cameroonians living in the US under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson announced Friday.

Roughly 14,600 Afghans will lose TPS protections in May, while around 7,900 Cameroonians will face termination in June.

The TPS program shields migrants from deportation to war-torn countries or those facing natural disasters and grants them work authorization. However, the Trump administration has argued that the TPS has been misused to allow migrants to remain in the US indefinitely, making its rollback part of a wider crackdown on immigration.

    Al Mayadeen English (Twitter)

According to Reuters, Special Envoy Steven Witkoff suggested that the quickest path to a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire would be for the United States to formally recognize Russia’s claim over four disputed regions: Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye.

The recommendation followed Witkoff’s trip to Saint Petersburg, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund. Talks reportedly focused on possible avenues for ending the war.

Sources say the envoy had also met privately with Dmitriev in Washington days earlier before presenting the proposal to Trump. General Keith Kellogg, Trump’s Special Envoy for Russia and Ukraine, was in attendance and opposed the idea, stating, “Kiev would never agree to simply give up its claim on the four regions.”

  • A Child is Gone—Because of a Phone.

I saw on CNN, A boy left home in anger because his parents seized his phone. He never returned. He died.

Pause and let that sink in.

A life is lost, a family is shattered, and all of us as parents are left asking—where do we draw the line?

Smartphones have become the heartbeat of this generation. To our children, a phone is more than just a device; it’s their connection to the world, their friendships, their entertainment, and even their safe space. But what happens when that connection is cut off abruptly? When they feel unheard? When the device they hold so dear is suddenly taken away, leaving them feeling powerless?

We grew up in a different time. No phones, no social media, no constant digital stimulation. But our children are growing up in an era where their entire world revolves around a screen. We may not always understand it, but we cannot ignore it.

    So, What Do We Do?

1️⃣ Start with Conversations, Not Confiscation
Before you snatch that phone in frustration, pause. Talk. Help them understand why limits are necessary. Explain with love, not just authority.

    2️⃣ Set Boundaries Early
Let phone use come with clear rules—when, how, and for what purpose. It should never be an all-access pass to addiction.

    3️⃣ Build Emotional Intelligence
A child who understands emotions can manage disappointment better. Let’s raise children who can handle “no” without breaking.

4️⃣ Stay Connected Beyond the Screen
If the only thing keeping your child engaged is a phone, then we have work to do. Let’s be intentional about bonding beyond technology.

5️⃣ Teach Them That a Phone is a Tool, Not Their Identity
We must help our children understand that their worth is not tied to a device. Their voice matters with or without Wi-Fi.

This is More Than Just About Phones…

This is about our children’s mental health. About the fragile emotions they don’t always know how to express. About making sure they feel seen, heard, and valued—not just when they have a phone in hand, but always.

A child is gone, and we cannot afford to look away.

    Parents, #GADA let’s talk.
What age did you or will give your kids a little hone and for those who have, How do you handle phone conflicts in your home? Let’s learn from each other.

They are hospitable to a fault thus, many have accused them of giving out their wives to entertain guests which is totally false. A Tiv man does not joke with three things: his wife, meat and wine.

They are great farmers, contributing immensely in making Benue State the food basket of Nigeria.
They have four to five tonations that are mutually intelligible.
